<<Console Wars>> PS5 vs. XSX

'Biomutant' Will Be Native 4K On Xbox Series X, But Not PS5
Biomutant-Feature-Art-320x180.jpg
This week in backwards compatibility lol.

Game seems to do well on the next gen consoles but holy shit at the S. Resolution can drop to 512p.

I’ve barely made it out of the tutorial on my pc but I fully intend to keep going.

Wow Series X drops to 1080p? I was really close to just investing in a console this gen and not worrying about gaming on a PC. I figured both consoles would hit 4k regularly at this point. Glad I went ahead and got a 3080.

Dynamic scaling so those are worst case scenarios. I was just shocked to see a GameCube resolution on a 2020 console.

Yea I get it's dynamic scaling but still 1080p? It should never have to go that low. I played all through Metro it was a great game and it looked great. I didn't think it was something beyond the current gen consoles capabilities. The Series S I'm not surprised with at all. I've never been a fan of that console being released and a few devs made that clear before it's release as well. I'm sure more devs would have spoke up but I understand the relationship between dev and console maker is a sensitive one.

Edit: I just realized I played and beat this right before the enhanced edition came out so forget that point.

Doom Eternal's next-gen patch tested on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles
On PlayStation 5 and Series X, the same RT features are in place and they are effectively on par with the PC's medium RT quality level, with reflections rendered at one third the current resolution...In terms of pixel counts, Series X does seem to resolve higher numbers in stress points compared to PlayStation 5.
Next up, there's the 120Hz mode, which works best on HDMI 2.1 displays, allowing for the game's full resolution to successfully resolve at full frame-rate. This looks to offer something akin to the last-gen Doom Eternal experience at twice the performance level. Xbox Series X operates at a dynamic 1800p, while PlayStation 5 tops out at 1584p - and it is visibly blurrier.
It's also interesting to note that Xbox Series consoles use the hardware-based tier two VRS feature of the RDNA2 hardware, which is not present on PlayStation 5. VRS stands for variable rate shading, adjusting the precision of pixel shading based on factors such as contrast and motion. Pre-launch there was plenty of discussion about whether PS5 had the feature or not and the truth is, it doesn't have any hardware-based VRS support at all.

I think you posted the wrong video. That’s DF’s Doom Eternal review from a year ago. I think you probably meant to post one of these two videos instead.

My bad. I didn't pay attention when I fetched the YouTube link (because those embed).

Only managed to get through 4 of 15 pages! I was hoping to read this thread and be a little clearer on which console to pick. I'm not on either side of the war. Am I able to use either console without going online, ie. can I still buy game discs and play that way? My last console was the original xbox and my daughters are interested in a console, mainly for minecraft and I really don't want them online. I'd also like to play the occasional adventure game/RPG like skyrim. So we aren't hardcore gamers so can't justify the $40 per month (local rates) for gamepass.

Making it through four pages was stoic. This thread definitely wasn't constructed as a primer on a shopping choice between the two consoles.

You can use both consoles without going online. You can still buy game discs and play that way, but only with the $500 console versions: the Xbox Series X for Xbox (not the Xbox Series S), and the standard PS5 (not the "Digital Edition"). These are the versions of each console that have an optical disc drive.

Minecraft runs on everything, so you could get either, but Mojang-- the studio that developed and runs Minecraft-- is now owned by Microsoft, so it's reasonable to assume the Xbox might receive priority for optimization in the future. On the other hand, one of the greatest distinguishing traits of Minecraft, historically, is that it runs on everything, and I mean everything, and has always been devoted to being platform-agnostic software, so it's also reasonable to assume it won't. Right now, neither the Xbox Series X nor the PS5 runs an optimized version of that game for themselves: the 9th gen consoles.

REASONS TO FAVOR PLAYSTATION 5
If you like Skyrim, know that Microsoft now owns Bethesda, the company that makes the Elder Scrolls games, and the recent E3 show confirms they intend for Bethesda's major releases going forward to be "console exclusive" available only on the Xbox and PC. However, on the other hand, thanks to its backwards compatibility with the PS4, the Playstation has some exclusive RPGs and action/adventure games rich with RPG elements like the Horizon series. It's widely agreed that PS4 exclusives crushed Xbox One exclusives. You can review Playstation exclusives here:

The heart & soul of Microsoft's appeal is Game Pass, so if it's that expensive where you are, it's difficult to recommend the Xbox. This is especially true given that Sony realizes how potent Game Pass's appeal is, and have seriously ramped up the quality of games given away on PS Plus in the past several months (assuming PS Plus is cheaper for you, and this is an attractive incentive). They're giving away some real bangers. Here is a link to all their North American giveaways, but if you're located somewhere else, which I'm assuming you are, you can find the lists for your region linked at the top of this Reddit:
Playstation Plus giveaways

As far as hardware, the Playstation controller is widely agreed to be superior to the Xbox controller with the new haptic feedback support. This means that the triggers can lock if your gun jams in a game, for example.

While the PS5 console is generally an inferior piece of hardware, it does enjoy a few advantages, such as a faster SSD, which has offered mixed results, but is tending to win loading time comparisons. It also boasts dedicated audio hardware which if implemented can offer a superior sound experience in games.

While the PS5 has less storage out-of-the-box, it runs on universal SSD technology, and it has a second m.2 slot. It's not operational yet, but it eventually will be. This means you will be able to expand game-playing storage more cheaply than with the Xbox which requires a proprietary Seagate expansion card for this exceptionally fast storage space that can run 9th gen games. You can store 9th gen games on the older USB external hard drives, which are far cheaper than either of the above, but you can't play 9th gen games directly from these drives. However, both media and games from the previous gen, such as Minecraft, can be stored or played directly from the old USB external hard drives.

Finally, you said you want to keep your girls offline, but for yourself, if you play multiplayer, know the PS5 has currently outsold the Xbox Series X/S by better than a 3:2 ratio globally, so there is a deeper player base. This can be favorable to queue times, for example. Otherwise, your personal friend networks matters more.

REASONS TO FAVOR XBOX
As far as a general comparison, the PS5 enjoyed favor among gamers upon each console's respective announcement, largely building on the momentum of the PS4's dominance from the previous generation, so I went to great lengths to build posts documenting the Xbox's appeal.
Why should I buy an Xbox over a Playstation? (last updated Oct-29-2020)

Per Section #1 in the link above, Microsoft robustly broadened details of its upcoming "Console Exclusive" library with its recent E3 showing. You can watch that showcase event on YouTube below:
Microsoft/Bethesda E3 Games Showcase: Starfield is a confirmed Xbox Exclusive

I've gone to great lengths to detail these games, and also the many multiplatform games which run superior versions on the Xbox console (both from this 9th generation of consoles and from the last).

@GergreG, I should mention, you should check out the gray markets for Game Pass Ultimate digital codes at reduced rates in your region (note these are also available for PS Plus). At a minimum you can purchase it at its intended retail of $15/mo. I'm wondering, btw, if you have confused the 3-month rates of Game Pass Ultimate with the 1-month rate. I wasn't aware that Game Pass subscriptions are sold at such a steep premium anywhere in the world.

So this thread is probably the best place to rant about it, but I have a bit of a gripe with Xbox/Gamepass compared to PS4/5/PSN and it’s this: DLC is really expensive, to the point that it arguably negates the benefits of Gamepass.

For example, I managed to buy Fallout 4 with all of its DLC bundled with Skyrim Special Edition for PS4 for like $25-30 Canadian maybe 6-12 months ago (don’t recall exactly when). I never got around to playing them so into my backlog they went. Fast forward to now and I have a Series X with Gamepass so I figure ok, I’ll play Fallout 4 on this instead and have the added benefit of FPS boost that Series X has but PS5 doesn’t. However, I’ve heard that the Far Harbour DLC is worth playing, but it’s not included with Gamepass so I look for it in the Xbox marketplace and it’s fucking $38 Canadian just for the DLC alone. It’s fucking more than I paid for the GOTY edition of Fallout 4 bundled with Skyrim.

tl/dr: Price of one DLC for Fallout 4 on Xbox costs more than GOTY Fallout 4 with all DLC on PS5 negating the the savings of Gamepass

You must’ve got the GOTY edition on sale, cause fallout 4 without the DLC is $39.99 Canadian on PSN. A more fair comparison is the price of DLC if you downloaded the game via game pass or PS Now, the vanilla version is available on both services.

It was on sale, but my point is I got Fallout 4 GOTY + Skyrim special edition for less than the Far Harbour DLC alone. I hope that maybe I can find the DLC for sale sometime on Xbox for like $10 or less but I’m not optimistic.

Nice, I’m looking at the price of the GOTY edition right now, and it’s $79.99 on PSN.

Even that isn't apples-to-apples. Fallout 4 isn't downloadable on PSNow. It can only be streamed. So it isn't equal to Fallout 4 which can be played locally on Game Pass. The DLC isn't listed as a playable at all on PSNow.

Yeah, that rant has me scratching my head. The normal price for the "Bundle Edition" he mentioned on PSN is $80:
https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP1003-CUSA02557_00-FO4SEASONPASS000
  • $30 = Standard
  • $50 = Season Pass (standalone DLC)
  • $60 = GOTY Edition
  • $80 = Bundle Edition
Meanwhile, if you're on Game Pass, both the Bundle Edition & the GOTY edition sell for a normal price of $32, and that's a non-sale price:
  • $20 Included = Standard (with Game Pass subscription)
  • $35 $31.5 = Season Pass (with Game Pass subscriber discount)
  • $40 $32 = GOTY Edition (with Game Pass subscriber discount)
  • $40 $32 = Bundle Edition (with Game Pass subscriber discount)
Third Party Pricing
# = The GOTY edition includes all six DLC packs, and purchasers receive a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X/S optimized version for free.

Been playing Horizon Zero Dawn for a 20+ hours now, and I’m still enjoying the game…been doing side quests and now focusing on the main quests now.

Playing it on the PS5, after i’m done this game, I’m going to play some Spider-Man Miles Morles to take full advantage of the system

Now you’ve been introduced to the big scam. I bought the Collector’s Edition of Eternal, with all the DLC, for less than I paid for a single one through the Microsoft store.

Trapping you into the M$ ecosystem is priority one. Sad stuff tbh.

$40/month!???

Where do you live that Gamepass cost that much? How much does one game cost (for PS4 or XBox One game brand new) for reference?

#DOOM Eternal is a Smart Delivery title meaning that not only do you get optimization upgrade to the latest platform for free, but you are afforded dual ownership of the game (on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S simultaneously in the cloud). As you can see above, the supreme console version of this game, outperforming the PS5 variant, is running on the Xbox Series X.

For that matter, the supreme console version of Fallout 4 is running on the Xbox Series X which runs the 4K@30fps Xbox One X optimized version of the game while the PS5 only runs a 1440p@30fps PS4 Pro version of the game. Alternatively, XSX/XSX users may opt to run the FPS Boost version which is 1080p@60fps if they prefer a higher framerate. In fact, Xbox gamers have already devised a method to run the full 4K version at 60fps (the same trick works for Fallout 76):

Method to run 4K@60fps said:
1. Start Fallout 4 with FPS Boost off and go to the in-game main menu.
2. Switch to another game so that Fallout 4 is stored in a Quick Resume save state.
3. Turn on FPS Boost for Fallout 4.
4. Start Fallout 4 using Quick Resume. Fallout 4 should now be capped at 60fps and be rendering at 4K. This method will need to be repeated if the game is closed.

The "big scam", apparently, is to offer superior everyday pricing on the special Fallout 4 bundle edition for $32 (-$8) versus the past sale price for the Playstation platform of $40 quoted as a purchase price in this thread. Alternatively, if one doesn't care about the Skyrim: LE content, he may get it for the drastically cheaper $16 price (-$24) via third party stores like Amazon.

Meanwhile, for DOOM Eternal, the subscriber can unlock all DLC by simply purchasing the Year One Pass DLC to add-on to the base game afforded to him by his subscription for $27 (-$3), and thus play all content for cheaper than a PS5 gamer seizing on this temporary sale price of $30 (the normal $90 price is +$18 more expensive than what a Game Pass subscriber would pay outside the sale). Alternatively, he may buy the physical GOTY Edition from Gamestop for $34, which does not appear to be a temporary price, once it's back in stock, and only spend +$4 to own both the base game and all DLC in perpetuity (though I don't know why anyone would do this because Bethesda games are first party, and aren't ever leaving the service, so purchasing the DLC is all that is necessary so long as one maintains a subscription to the "big scam").

So, to summarize, Game Pass is affording superior versions of these games and all their DLC content access...for cheaper.
