Am I the only one that thinks this layoff is probably a good thing long term?

Conor's had a bunch of fights in a short gap of time, and absorbed some really hard shots. In the Diaz fight his chin finally met it's match.

IMO, this time off, hopefully until sometime in October, will let this man rejuvenate and get back to kicking ass.

If he can't get back 145, I'd love to see him rematch with Joe Duffy, provided Duffy wins his next match.

Would be a nice winnable fight for Conor, and decent measuring stick in terms of his place in the division.

I think his brain needs a break as well. He's on the verge of a nervous breakdown doing promo.

Despite what he says about owning the game and being more active than anybody else, he's clearly burned out at this point, so yeah, he definitely needs it.

It's all fun and games when you're on top. The real test comes after a loss. That's when you pay the tax of celebrity, and Conor is paying his tax just like Ronda was post Holly Holm.

This recent stumble aside, he's a better taxpayer than Ronda, although that's not saying much. Nevertheless, he's not some mythical being or once in a generation athlete. He's a big 145er who has a heck of a left hand. LW is one of if not the most competitive weight class in the UFC. A number of people will give him a ton of problems at LW, with or without the sabbatical.

I have no interest in him fighting a no name like Duffy, who already lost to the French dude Conor beat. The Duffy sub was ancient history. Conor needs to stay stubborn and go for the gold at LW, so whether he wins or gets wrecked the popcorn will be glorious. F tune ups. Win big or get rekt big, that's the way of the popcorn.

Taking that L and taking a break will benefit him for sure. He was humbled and now he can focus on working on obvious holes in his game. I definitely think he will come back better, just not against Nate again.

What layoff?
He fought in March & might fight end of July

I wondered in the past how long he could go until he burned out. You could see how fatigued he was at some events in the past, where he wasn't breathing normally and instead was taking these huge breaths. It wasn't like he just came from doing sprints; he was stressed the fuck out.

He reached his breaking point. Going to be interesting to see where he goes from here.

All the cocaine-induced ramblings in the promotional press conferences takes a bigger toll on Conor

I think the layoff may be great for Conor's game but it's horrible for his wallet. In combat sports you have to strike while the iron is hot, especially coming off a loss. The layoff won't even necessarily be that long as far as being away from fighting but just as he began to be a recognizable name by non-MMA fans, he drops out of the public eye. That's not good. So, we'll see how it goes but I think he's hurting his drawing power. If he's become more about the martial arts side of things, than the $$$ thing then he's definitely doing the right thing.

Could do.

Even before all this bollocks came about, he done his usual interview before he left for Vegas and mentioned how after the dos Anjos fight and 200 he was done fighting in Vegas - though he recanted on that in the last press conference with Diaz - and talked about only being interested in fighting on the East coast or Ireland. Thought it was a bit odd at the time as Vegas is the UFC's hub and if he wanted to fight East coast only, there's not many options there and PPVs held regularly enough in that area.

The loss could make him re-evaluate his skill set and doing all that travelling - that press conference for dos Anjos was a waste of time - a 14 hour flight to do a 25 minute Q&A, listening to the "media" asking Holm and Tate about Rousey and wearing that ridiculous shirt. I think he done the commercials and something for the video game as well. If he was living in the States it mightn't be much of an issue, but I doubt that'll happen.

What he done the week of 189 was ridiculous and then going straight into doing TUF all off the back of that world tour with Aldo.

I don't think burn out was the reason he lost to Diaz - I'd put it down to, from his perspective, being predictable, throwing too many loaded shots that missed and probably his belief that weight isn't an issue - he must have had a 'oh shit' moment when Diaz picked up the pace and came forward.

First world problems.

It's a good thing for him to take this break so atleast he can get his mind right and mature a little. The only problem is here on out he will never have a give me fight again as he is the highest paid in the UFC and his status. He will have nothing but tough fights and he will need to prove himself that he is loyal to the UFC brass and make amends for this circus and lies he just pulled. Hopefully he does get it together he's a fun fighter to watch just not a fan of his nuthuggers believing every little thing he preaches.

The break will definitely do him good.

GSP said the pressure of being at the top was mentally breaking him.
Bones said the same thing.
Ronda spread went nuts at Holly for no reason.
Anderson lost his mind and clowned to an extent he never had before against The Chris.
Jose Aldo went from bored to furious and charged in uncharacteristically with his guard down.

Conor put on a brave face but was clearly broken by Nate. The pressure at the top is cray.

Duffy??? I don't care what weight he fights at, 145-170, but he has pigeon holed himself into a corner of fighting top ranked guys. Duffy just lost, Connor needs to fight against a top ranked fighter, and he needs to win, otherwise his million dollar paydays are over. The position that he has put himself in, and the money he has made and is going to make off his next fight, he doesn't get the luxury of a warm up fight.

I don't consider this to be a layoff. He just fought, and will again before the end of the year.

I think he should take sometime off though and evaluate what he wants to do now

He should have just taken some time off in the first place instead of going right into an ill conceived rematch and melting down.
