Comic Book Discussion Thread V.17 (R.I.P. Sal Buscema)

Anyone remember when the Savage Dragon teamed up with the TMNT way back in the day?

Dude, get the IDW collections. They have 2 out so far and go up to issue 20. They also include one-shots and micro series. The next one comes out this August and it's going to include the City Fall arc.

You should also pick up the Batman crossover. It includes the IDW turtles and the last issue is coming out this month.

Have you seen the trailers for the new games? It's based off the IDW comics

I'm already on issue #16 I think I will just keep getting the volumes because I don't think I can wait lol

Yeah I've been keeping an eye on that game. I was going to get that Out of the Shadows game a while ago when it was on Steam sale but decided to just wait for this one to drop. Haven't played a turtles game since the Turtles in Time remake on 360

If you mean giant event crossovers with lots of hype, I see what you mean. But if you just mean enjoyable books, then I think I found your problem right here :)

Personally, the only books I'm reading right now from the Big 2 are Criminal and and Astro City. Even then, those are from Icon and Vertigo. (oh yeah, and Miracleman, but I don't really count that as a Marvel comic)

Image is putting out a bunch of great science fiction flavoured books right now; Elephantmen is probably my favourite. And there are Invincible and The Walking Dead if you want to go more mainstream. It's shocking how good Image is nowadays if you remember anything about the books that they published in their early years.

Dark Horse puts out a couple of Conan books that are still very good, even after over ten years and changing creative teams.

There is the Valiant reboot that is bringing a lot of classic concepts back into the spotlight. I'm interested to see how Harbinger and Hardcorps will work in todays more PC environment.

If you don't mind going into back issues, Avatar has published a lot of awesome work from Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis. RIght now they are publishing Mercury Heat by Kieran Gillen that is promising (but hasn't had enough issues to quite hook me yet).

Dynamite has a lot of interesting licensed properties. Their James Bond is excellent so far. And Devolution (and original property I think) by Rick Remender is fun in a Mad Max meets Escape from New York kind of way.

I've been reading Kieran Gillen's Uber. Its pretty fuckin' hardcore. Realisticish WW2-depiction of if the nazi's found ways to make superhuman soldiers, and release them just as the soviets are getting ready to invade Berlin. Morally ambigious story-telling, and as I mentioned the description of WW2 has a gritty, "realistic" feel to it.

Apart from that it's been a while since I read anything by Ellis or Ennis. Last would be The Boys and.. fuck, maybe Global Frequency, guess I should try to get up to date on some of their stuff.

I collected them all as well. I loved the savage dragon when I was a kid. I have a series collection of his solo title as well. Not all of it but at least 50+ issues

I caught up on some stuff this week:
Doctor Strange -- really bad imo. Really getting sick of the unexplainable unstoppable villains Marvel likes to create. So lazy.
Saga -- always a good read. So many interesting characters and the drama is cool. This could be a great HBO show.
Hellboy -- Meh. Mignola has been mailing it in since HB died. So many empty panels. At least he's illustrating. Nobody can capture that universe like Mike.
Invincible -- Meh, but potentially going to be epic soon.
East of West -- kind of losing the narrative. Great concept and character designs, tho.

Run The Jewels and Black Panther.

Pretty bad ass video.

Darwyn Cooke is receiving palliative care for an aggressive form of cancer.

Sad news.

RIP, one of my favorites. Wish his family well.

dam Cooke died, destroyed, he was incredible, Kirby-esque artist, DC The New Frontier is a must

The best thing about current mainstream comics, Darth Vader series will be cancelled with issue 25.

Not because it has low sales, in fact it's a top 10 book since it launched. Seems to be the story had a definitive, beginning, middle and end. Plus writer Gillen will be leaving marvel to do more creator owned work.

Marvel has lost all their big name writers the past year or so. Most names on the cover of marvels comics are unrecognizable these days.

whats everyone reading right now?. Just looking for suggestions. Just finished reading the new old man logan storyline and got hooked. I'm not a big xmen fan but that series is legit. Went back and read the original stories that lead up to it.

Saga, RAI, East of West (it gets a little weird but its still pretty strong imo), Chew, Wytches, elephantmen, manhatten project, anything image basically, with some Valiant thrown in, if you wanna go reread a classic I would try Sandman, old Hellboy is good as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. Image and Valiant have some really great books so I will check them out for sure. I was checking out saga earlier after hearing some good things about it. I love fiona staples artwork so im gonna start reading that soon.
