In preparation for Secret Wars, I'm going back and reading all of the events that led up to this one. I'm starting with Original Sin, then moving to Avengers: Time Runs Out, and then Prelude to Secret Wars, which has issues of comics from years past that dropped hints, I'm guessing, as to what was to come, including New Avengers 1-3, the original SW 10-12, FF 611, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 1, and Ultimate Comics Ultimates 4. Anxious to see how this all adds up.

If anyone has any other suggestions, feel free to recommend. I won't be going through all of the different storylines that make up the various parts of Battleworld, as that would be more time co aiming than what I've already got going. Although I am revisiting Inferno, just bc that was a storyline that, while I remember it while it was actually happening in the late 80's, I was simply too young to keel up with the entire thing. Same for many of the other Battleword settings, though I just can't go through and read then all, as by the time I were to be through with them all, Secret Wars itself would probably be three years old by that time lol. But anything that can be directly involved with this storyline that is more current, I*will*certainly consider giving a look.

Anyone else revisiting any old storylines in preparation for this event? Is anyone else actually excited for this event, or is everyone kind if meh? I'm excited, bc this gives me a good jumping on point to get back into reading Marvel for the first time in a decade, where everything will be fresh and new and I won't be missing much continuity nor be lost as far as anything that has happened previously that I missed out on.

I have no idea what's going on in Secret Wars. Esad Ribic and Ive Svorcina are a great combo.

@ Kong - caught up on Avengers. Regretted it immediately.

I've enjoyed moments of this giant, 3 year, convoluted, bullshit storyline...BUT now
I feel dirty, like I just bought a timeshare. Soooooo many new, 100% superfluous characters and side stories.
Now we have secret wars, and for some reason I'm supposed to care about the cabal? Castrated Thanos, and old herald of Galactus, black bolt's brother, and 3 made up characters?

Can't wait for Bendis' X-Men run to be over so I can waste my money on other publishers.

^^ yeaaaah that's where I am with Marvel as well.

Maybe my tastes have changed a bit, but it just seems like Marvel isn't (for the most part) good with their own characters anymore. Yeah yeah, characters progress and change and whatnot.. but it just seems like all the "progress" is just to make noise and generate short term cash. I dunno, compared to what Image is putting out, Marvel is starting to suck ass. And I hate saying that. Maybe it's Disney's influence, maybe not.

Trimmed the Marvel titles down to Silver Surfer, Leia (mini series), Nightcrawler (cancelled from what I hear), and Uncanny Avengers (which I might drop shortly). Wondering how much longer Silver Surfer is going to be around, but hell, it really depends on how long Mike Allred's on it. Would love for him to sling out a miniseries for his Atomics or something.

Invincible is still the #1 best comic book in the world.

Haven't read it since 2005. Had every issue up to that point and enjoyed the hell out of it.

Maaaaaybe it's time to get caught up.

Def time to catch up. Invincible has been consistently great and a lot has happened since '05.

So, I take it that those of you who have read Marvel consistently over the last decade do not like the output that has been produced?

I think marvel is missing a beat since Bendis left avengers. I really enjoyed his 8 year tenure as top dog.

What's up Rama.

I'm surprised u didn't like the ending of New Avengers.

I do agree we had a lot of characters introduced that seem to not be that important. Hickmans run has been different tha. Anything marvel ever published before.

I think it's one of those things where u like it or don't. But I do agree the story seemed to take a long ass time to develop to where we are today.

I like that the big events have a mini series so I don't have to read every title that ties into it.

I quit reading around the time Civil War ended, so not quite a decade ago. But those few years before, when Bendis was writing seemingly everything, and everything he wrote was great, was about the best time I can remember for Marvel. His New Avengers run was some of the best superhero based comics I've ever read, and made reading em exciting again. I quit reading superhero comics though, as I decided I needed to go back and read all of the Vertigo titles I'd missed through the years (Sandman, The Dreaming, Preacher (although I caught the last 20-30 issues of that while it was still in publication), Transmetropolitan, Lucifer, etc.) Once I got back into those kinds of comics, I kinda left Marvel behind. Now that they doing their own version of Crisis, I figure this is a good point to jump back in, since everything will start fresh.

I also have a sneaking suspicion (and I hope to God I'm right), that Marvel will have a renaissance of sorts, similar to the one DC has after Crisis on Infinite Earths, and they produced all of those classic DC stories like Batman: Year One, The Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Byrne's Man of Steel. That may have all been coincidental, right writers at the right time, but fingers crossed that Marvel has something similar happen. With a clean slate and no continuity holding them back, Marvel's writers could have an opportunity to write some classics. I wanna be there for it, if it happens.

Then again, we could get the All New, All Different Sleepwalker #1 as well. If that happens, I will go right back to reading old comics I missed as a child again. Fuck Sleepwalker and his alien looking ass.

It is better than the days of Atlantis Attacks, where you had to buy every annual from every comic to follow what the hell was going on. That is one thing the big two definitely do right these days. I'd still probably read all of the side stories though, even if I don't have to, just to get a more complete story. But the option not to have to is a good thing. DC over did it when they were doing things like Infinite Crisis, and it had 20 minis to go along with the actual miniseries proper.

U know what's funny Boulders is that if u go to some of the comic book websites they hate Bendis there. Like hate him with a passion. But they all love Hickman like he created the wheel.

It's like this total hipster love for Hickman. I for one love Bendis and just about everything he's ever written for marvel.

The difference is Hickman writes these big ideas and Bendis writes heart to his characters.

I think I'm only gonna collect the Star Wars comics and about 3 of the secret wars titles. I'll see what happens with marvel after secret wars is over to see what I'll start collecting.

I'll go by creative team rather than specific titles.

Bendis writes mostly superb shit.

Bendis/Maleev had me reading Daredevil for a while.. Outstanding bit there.

Bendis/Bachalo's run on X-Men has been a blast, just started reading the All New X stuff and it's okay so far.

Was reading the Avengers when Spider-Man and Wolverine jumped on board. Didn't think it was gonna work but well.. It fuckin did.

Guess what I'm rambling about is Bendis is a pretty solid writer.
