Comic Book Discussion Thread V.15

I really don't like the idea of the movies dictating the comics either. But it seems with the popularity and them canceling certain runs it isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

It is my right as a comic fan to complain about everything. Speaking of cancellations though, they cancelled She-Hulk and kept Captain Marvel going despite She-Hulk selling better lol.

Black Nick Fury is the son of white Nick Fury? That's so screwy? I prefer white Nick Fury surrounded by busty female cleavage SHIELD agents over Samuel L Jackson anyday.

So if I read some Marvel comic from iTunes right now, what Marvel Universe is that? 616? Ultimate? How do I know what the hell I'm reading? Are there any 616 titles currently running?

Just finished Old Man Logan.

HOLY S***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That run was F**king insane. Just crazy, great art, exciting, violent, no holds barred awesomeness.

Now, try Joss Whedon's ASTONISHING X-MEN #1 to #24 and the last issue Giant Size Astonishing X-Men #1.

It's a bit of a long read but absolutely worth it.

616 is the normal marvel universe , the main world so to say you'll know you are reading Ultimate because they are marked as such

They're keeping Captain Marvel around because it's a part of the new direction of the company.

She-Hulk, OTOH... I'll show you why She-Hulk was cancelled:

Which more than most comics is an especially egregious bait and switch because of the amazing cover art from Kevin Wada. Then you open the comic and you get this shit. While that style of art flies in black and white indy comics or in small doses in anthology books like 2000 AD, no one wants to see that shit in a full monthly title.

IDK why Marvel thinks people are going to accept art styles that are completely unsuitable for the medium. Like that guy John Lucas who was doing Deadpool for a while - yeah, for one panel political art, great. For page after page, issue after issue, it's not just unsuitable, it's terrible.

I don't need overly sexualized comics and that weird boobs and butt pose does absolutely nothing for me but if you can't draw faces, you shouldn't be drawing comics.

Marvel is letting the movies dictate what happens in the 616 universe. This is not a good thing. Also another male character is being replaced with a female: THE JUGGERNAUT.

Wat.

Do not want.

Don't make mine Marvel, DC is the way to go, they might make you gay, but at least you'll be from an alternate universe written by Grant Morrison!

Female Juggernaut driven by a gem?

Sounds like a gold digger.

Me thinks if Silver Surfer gets canned or if Mike Allred leaves the title anytime soon I'll be taking a break from Marvel. All about story progression but this shit's ridiculous.

Except Black Widow as long as Phil Noto's doing the art.

I just bought the first trade of She Hulk but haven't gotten to it yet.

A lot of people seem to like this book.

I've never read any X-Men, are there any prior issues I should read to get caught up?

Grant Morrison's New X-Men. It might be a bit 'out there' for a new reader such as yourself, but that run was responsible for getting the X-books back on track. And Joss Whedon himself said his Astonishing X-Men was basically like a sequel to Morrison's New X-Men run.

thanks man I'll read his and then transition to the Whedon run

ASTONISHING stands on its own well enough.

Slogging through X-history might be too onerous because continuity has never been its strength. It's one thing to endure Claremont's dialogue and prose on a monthly basis when we had nothing else (stylistically speaking) to get our mutant fix, but now that other writers have refined the style of storytelling Claremont's schtick may come off as pedestrian and stilted. One of the major appeals of the Whedon and Morrison runs is BECAUSE they were NOT trapped by over-exposition. Which is odd for me to say, knowing Whedon and knowing Morrison.

Claremont wrote during an era of monthly comics, in which each month he endeavored to introduce all his characters so you could kinda pick up the series anywhere. These days stories are more parsed in binge-read format where there's less need to constantly remind readers who these people are and what they can do.

It would be like drinking RC Cola to prepare yourself for how good Coke is. Like any good porn star, you want to go straight to the Coke.

I feel ya man, I just like understanding when they reference things or understand backstory or how a character got to where they are now, the character development, etc

I think there's something about when you've read a lot about characters it makes the story impact you more. If I pick up a new run of a comic that I haven't read before and someone dies it's like why do I give a crap? just an example.

You also need to read Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force after you read Morrison's New X-Men and Whedon's Astonishing X-Men. Those are pretty much the best modern runs on X-books you'll ever read.

Definitely hear you there.

The only thing you need to know prior to ASTONISHING X-MEN...

... is that Colossus was out of publishing rotation for a good long while.

Colossus was a fan favorite beloved for the juxtaposition of his poetic spirit against his mutant power, which rendered him metallic and super strong.

Just before Grant Morrison relaunched NEW X-MEN, Colossus was involved in a large storyline resulting in his death and as such Morrison wasn't permitted to use him (he would instead incorporate Emma Front, recreating one of the best characters of the mythos), so we're talking a solid three years without Colossus.

AOA occurs in a separate universe from canon*; you can go back to that later.

*There is minor overlap, though.

Alright awesome, appreciate the help. Comic continuity/timelines/canon/tie-ins/alt unis get hella confusing to keep track of when trying to read
