Cool thanks for all the suggestions. If I was to go right now and buy something, would everyone agree on Watchmen as a first go?

You can't go wrong with Watchmen.

When I got into graphic novels, Watchmen and Batman: The Killing Joke were the first ones I bought.

Nah, too sophisticated. One could re-read WATCHMEN each year and discover something new about ad infinitum, but you'd probably want more exposure to comic book storytelling in order to appreciate all the love that goes into it.

Alan Moore is a great starting point, though, and I would recommend TOP TEN VOL 1 and 2 or LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN as fun primers to the genre. The art on LOEG isn't exactly for everyone though, but I've noticed that not too many people care greatly about art by comparison to story.

this is going to sound awful, but the sin city movies are way better than the graphic novels imo.
What? Why? Who?! Are you simply not a comic book guy?

Aside from stuff like Watchmen, Preacher, Sandman etc:

Punisher MAX (Garth Ennis, please)
Daredevil: Born Again
Old Man Logan
X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills

It leaves a warm, happy feeling in your stomach when the writer for one of your favorite books responds to an email you send them. Especially when they say they liked it so much they wanna share it.

That's very cool. You gonna make us beg or give the deets.

I've been meaning to read some serious Judge Dredd since I was a kid (I had one copy of 2000AD and the Dredd story in it was awesome (Had some dude getting torn apart by some kind of surgical robot))

I should get around to buying some shit

Sandman

Lucifer

Fables

Preacher

Watchmen

The Thanos Imperative

The Incal

Blacksad

The Metabarons

Berserk

Akira

Dorohedoro

Vinland Saga

I guess like something outside of the standard comic book hero norm, or that goes in a direction outside of the standard story.....if that makes sense. Old Man Logan sounds right up that alley. I'm totally new to this, outside of reading comics growing up. These were the standard X Men, Spider-Man, etc. I'm in my late 30s now, so want something more "mature" or something. If that makes sense...

Makes sense. I didn't start reading graphic novels until my 30's and found i didn't care for a lot of super hero stuff as it just seemed corny (with exceptions, of course.) My top five for graphic novels are:

Watchmen by Alan Moore
Preacher by Garth Ennis (admittedly some of the story is over the top, but still great.)
Punisher MAX by Garth Ennis
100 Bullets by Brian Azzarello
The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman

Some other graphic novels not based on super hero stuff are:

Ex Machina by Brian K Vaughn - city worker who gains an alien power and becomes a politician. Retires from being a 'hero' to be Mayor.
Y: The Last Man by Brian K Vaughn - virus wipes out all men except for one.
Fables - By Bill Willingham - story book fables come to life in New York. Might sound cheesy, but is really good.

I would suggest just going to the store and flipping through a copy of volume 1 of a book from any of the suggestions people gave you and get a feel for it. Some series though really pick up after the first volume. You're in an awesome position of having so much great reading material in front of you. Read a couple books and then update your opinion on them, that way we can give recommendations to your tastes.

There are some great mature complex TBP's for almost any superhero. Do you have any preference? For instance if you like green arrow read longbow hunters. Or for batman the killing joke or death in the family. It's such a wide area it's be easier to find what characters you like and go from there.

Dustin Nguyen doin' some thangs.

I burn with jealousy.

What kills me is that's not even "genuine" Warren Ellis, whose work I find very anti-climactic.

Ellis translated Bayhem, what he called the widescreen approach. Bay's ultra dense hyper kinetic framework works better with the static image, where we've got time to soak in all the detail. I think what changed things was the brilliant re-introduction of the fun kick'n'splode that we had lost in the grim and gritty era.

Plus they were purer versions of their inspirations. What I like about analogues is they carry no baggage nor continuity restrictions. They boil straight down to the essence of Character more than the particular character they emulate. The idea of a rapist Captain America tears such a fucking hole in the fabric of satire it would be TOO on-the-nose if Millar didn't score bigtime with some choice one-liners. Although, and this is no surprise, I much prefer Ellis' subtlety. It feels like he has more respect for the suspension of disbelief, whereas Millar must deliver the porn straight into your eyeballs.

Prime Hitch was WASTED!! Girl, you know it's true!

I could talk to u about this for hours

I do agree their runs on Authority had similar vibe to it but
Ellis 12 issues are more nuanced than Marks.

Mark basically goes full balls to the wall with his run. It's even faster and hits harder than Ellis's run. Plus it's Frank Quitely on art choirs so how can I ever complain about that.

But one this is I've followed Ellis for years and really have never been disappointed by him. Especially when he was writing creator controlled stuff.

And Planetary is a must read for everyone.

I liked Preacher, Transmetropolitan, and 100 bullets, but those are pretty standard recommendations.

Are you being facetious? They are NOT standard recs...

For me, Preacher, Transmetropolitan, Planetary, and Y: The Last Man are the best comics I've ever read.

Planetary is the greatest thing ever written in regards to comics books.

It's like every popular genre of storytelling themes crammed into one incredible package.
