The fact that Colby, he is 35 !!! , get a TS, while staying aside in the pool for 1 year, means that the UFC do really not have stars.

And they are failing to build ones faster.

The exception is Poatan, they got him and now he is a popular fighter.

But there are exciting guys like Shavkat, Topuria, Arman, Fiziev, even Jiri, and they fail to promote them. It would have been a win-win situation, but no.

Being a monopoly does not mean you know how to do business.

If it would have been football, you would have had competition. Just check premier league or primera division.

There are still some stars
Jon Jones, Israel Adesanya, Conor (if he is returning)
I would say Islam and Volk too. Maybe Rob Whittaker

and at welterweight?

they fail to build Shavkat and there is so much material there

They need to find the right angle. Something that is easy for casuals to understand. Guy who is fun and great isnt that. Because there are other ones who are fun and great as well.

The every fight a finish one would be a start. Thats pretty sick.

You become a star only by

-Beating a star
-A star rubbing off on you.
-Doing something exceptional
-Being very good for a long ass time
-Having a X factor.
-You most likely need to be top 10 or champ.

If given an opportunity to headline, I am sure Paddy and Sean would do well.

I feel like Poatan is not really a star.
He stole some of Izzy's thunder but he's not tall enough to stand on his own.

The UFC isn't interested in building stars. They are more of a quantity type of MMA business now. Lots of events and the stars have to build themselves. If they wanted to put in the energy to do that they could. They've already proven to have the marketing ability. The problem is they have to pay those stars accordingly after they build them up.

Of course not. Notice they almost NEVER announce PPV buys anymore? Look at the PPV sales last year. 400K was the biggest? Jones is still the biggest draw at 500k-600k in his return last month, and I don't know that was ever confirmed. You have to go all the way back to 11/2021 for Mcgregor v Poirier 2 to see anything over 1M. The UFC pulls in PPV buys IN SPITE of the non-interest they get for some of the headliners, like 283. The UFC has all the power now.

While the UFC is certainly working on its global expansion, it’s still an American company with a predominantly English speaking fanbase. Shavkat, Arman, Topuria, Fiziev and Jiri are foreign non-native speakers. It’s quite a bit harder to sell a fight when the participants don’t speak the primary language of the audience and the most prominent media outlets. It’s why Anderson and Aldo’s profiles benefited from having Chael and Conor as dance partners.

Colby isn't getting a title shot cause he is a draw, he is getting a title shot in exchange for dropping the lawsuit against Masvidal. Masvidal has his own combat sports league and I think the UFC has ties to it so Masvidal being suited is bad for their business.

Agreed, the first being one of the most important. You need a few marquee names on the resume.

I would also add previous fame in other venues.
Izzy, Alex, Lesnar, Bo Nikal, Eddie Alverez, Greg Hardy just to name a few.

We've seen lots of guys come through that got a lot of people watching early due to previous stardom in boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, BJJ, WWF etc.

Colby is getting a title shot for 2 reasons:

1. The UFC is starved for American champs that look like him. This is one of their last opportunities to make this happen, as there’s nobody else in the pipeline other than O’Malley(who doesn’t appeal to the UFC’s older demographic).

2. He’s Trump’s favorite fighter. Masvidal got 2 title shots and Colby will be getting his 3rd, it isn’t a coincidence.

Or, Colby demanded a TS for being the backup for the last bout, and Dana does in fact honor handshake deals.
