Media Colby is the best WW once Usman is out of the Picture. Really though?

I'd like to see this fight too after Khamzat "Wrong Turn" Chimaev at least beats someone from 5 to 8 in the rankings. His best win is against some bum ranked 11 or 12 in the division. Let's pump the breaks a little on a top 5 guy until he beats someone legit. It's crazy how much Sherdoggers are gargling his nuts like Listerine. He dominated a few cans. Whoop de do da. You guys act like he the second coming of christ. Lol

Colby may be the second best in the division but he's in no hurry to prove it. Aside from fighting for the belt he likes easy fights hence him calling out teammates he knows from experience he'll dominate.

Bingo!
It's all conjecture until he proves it.

I mean he's top 3, but he only has a Masvidal win and 2 losses to show for it in today's WW division (he's top 3 more because of those 2 losses). He needs contenders not to fall into the freakshow category (which is perfectly fine too if he wants it).
You got Burns, Chimaev, Luque, Edwards in that top conversation and even Muhammad and Brady being one win away from it. Colby needs to enter it because those dudes are gonna pass him as long as Usman got the belt. Edwards has. Burns or Chimaev will. If Usman defends succesfully, I don't think banking on Poirier taking the fight is how he'll get a TS.
Then maybe he's waiting for them to pass him so he doesn't have to fight Usman for the belt lol

Dana praises him too much

Agreed; the dude is a phenomenal athlete, though.
I genuinely believe that anyone who can stop the TD, has a good gas tank, and throws straight punches beats him as long as they don't blow their load trying to finish (a la Usman in Rounds 2 & 3 of their last fight.)

He's like Tony in that he's extremely good in the scramble, has an endless gas tank, and is tough AsF!

If 5-8 is legit and 11-> are bums does that mean fighters 9 and 10 make everyone between?

By the way seems like anyone in top 10 except Usman has wins against other top 10 fighters. Why is this? Because you lose 1-2 fights and you are out from the rankings. Meanwhile Marlon Moreas gets knocked out three times in a row and is still ranked at bw.

I think he is. I'm also ready for him to fight the current top 5 and hot prospects though.

I honestly think aside from Usman that only Leon has a good chance of beating Colby. I'm always a bit slow to board a hype train, so maybe Shavkat and Khamzat are closer to that level than I currently rate them.

I like fighters who can dictate the pace and place of a fight. I like fighters who weaponize cardio by constantly engaging offensively in some manner. Colby is positively elite in those areas.

I can't think of anyone at any weight who expends as much energy in the cage as Colby consistently. Schtick aside, once the cage closes he is one of the easiest guys to find. He will be right in front of his opponent less than an arms length away. The real uncrowned BMF.

If anything he deserves a third title shot based on his performance in the second Usman fight cause most of us thought he won.

But anyway he should fight Dustin next and wait for someone else to dethrone Usman, and then he can fight one of those for number 1 contender.
Look at Colby's expression at the end of the fight, even he didnt think that he had won.

Guest that's not going to stop Colby fanboys from dreaming of title glory though <45>

No way to know, hasn't faced any of the other top guys like Edwards, Burns, etc. He could very well lose to all of those guys. I've been saying it for a while, but Edwards might be the best WW walking planet Earth right now. If he finally fights Usman, we may see it.

Agreed. He might be the 2nd best WW. But he might also be the 7th best. We won't know until he fights Edwards, Burns, Luque, Belal, Maybe Khaz.

Of course he will avoid them all like the plague.

He’s the best WW even with Usman in the picture. Colby beat him

Someone he needs to beat? Give him someone from 4 to 8. He needs to beat an established name before a fight with Cody....let alone Usman is even on the negotiating table. I don't understand how hard that is to understand? He hasn't beaten anyone of note yet. Still gotta prove yourself my man.

The top "contenders" at WW have some of the weakest resumes I have ever seen. Anyone who gets some combination of wins over Maia/RDA/Woodley becomes a top 5 guy apparently.

Covington has been incredibly inactive and has usually beaten guys who were coming off losing streaks. He may very well be the #2 guy in the division and he might not but until he starts fighting top guys consistently, he will continue to be in Alexander Gustaffson territory where he is ranked highly based on good performances in losses rather than actual quality wins.

There is a big bias against Colby and the competition he has faced. Since for about the last 4-5 years, Colby and Usman have faced roughly the same opponents. The main difference in opponents is Colby beating Lawler while Usman beat Burns.

As I posted in another thread:

Colby’s last 7 fights:
  • Masvidal
  • Usman
  • Woodley
  • Usman
  • Lawler
  • RDA
  • Maia

Kamaru’s last 7 fights:
  • Covington
  • Masvidal
  • Burns
  • Masvidal
  • Covington
  • Woodley
  • RDA
  • (Maia before that)

Now, one of these guys is considered p4p #1, while the other is considered roughly “fighting bad opponents”.

He only beat the corpse of Twood and decisiond a 40yo LW striker with 0 wrestling. thats enough for ufc to declare him the goat
Islam has one top 10 win and people think he deserves a title shot. Colby proved himself against Usman

The entire UFC WW top 10 has faced poor competition (in comparison to ranked fighters below 155) as far as I'm concerned. Woodley had clearly given up and has even lost to Logan Paul twice ffs yet guys who beat him during his skid still skyrocketed up the rankings.

RDA notched an admirable win over an aging Lawler but was this win of the quality to establish him as a top 170 win for Colby, Usman, Edwards, and Chiesa? I mean the guy struggled against wrestlers for literally his entire UFC career and was undersized for the division so it's pretty baffling that a decision win over him was enough to springboard fighters to title contention.

The other common win is Maia who was in his 40s ffs and was still incredibly 1 dimensional. Great fighter and a legend but is a win over him (especially for wrestlers who can stuff his takedowns) really that big of a deal? Apparently so because he is a top win for half of the guys in the rankings despite him being outside the UFC and basically retired.

While this may seem like nitpicking, I don't think we've ever seen a division with so many contenders who a) shared the same common wins, b) refused to fight each other, and c) still have legitimate question marks due to the skewed nature of their "top 10 wins".

Usman himself having 2 title defenses against Masvidal is absolutely shocking for a "p4p great" considering Mas has never won more than 3 fights in his UFC career and is a total journeyman. Leon Edwards has perhaps the least impressive 8 fight win streak I have ever seen as well.

TL/DR: Colby is overrated but so are the other contenders as well as (to a lesser degree) Usman. Until these contenders actually start fighting each other instead of coasting by on journeymen wins, the rankings at 170 will continue being extremely inflated

It's not who you beat, it's who you beat and when you beat them.
Woodley 38 years old on a 2 fight losing streak. Woodley ranked 7th on the pfp ranking when Usman fought him.
Masvidal 37 on 2 fight losing streak. Masvidal was coming of 2019 fighter of the year when Usman fought him.
Robbie Lawler 38 on a 2 fight losing streak
Demian 39 years old coming off a loss

Feasting on old vets on their way out sports don't put you on the pfp list.

Where are the 20 something year old Sean Strikeland 8-1 since fighting Usman, ranked 7th at MiddleWeight.
How about Leon Edwards on 9 fight winning streak. Currently second longest winning str in the UFC.
How about an early 30s Gilbert Burns ranked number 2 in the division.

I just want to see the ones the make the rankings drop Colby if he's going to only fight non relevant WWs or blown up LWs. I don't even see Colby at #2 to be honest. They need to shake rankings to get fighters like Colby to accept difficult fights. The Masvidal matchup went exactly like everyone predicted.

He got locked in a cage with the p4p best in the world, got his jaw broke and fought thru it, then chose to get locked in a cage with him again..... It is laughable that you think a man like that is scared.
