I was harshly critical of them for the Lewandowski hiring (and generally having commentators with no expertise whose only value was a willingness to blindly defend Trump), for airing live, unedited Trump rallies (free advertising with no news value), and for ridiculously overplaying the email story (presenting a minor security risk as the crime of the century and covering it more than all policy issues combined).

In this case, though, what's the theory? Do nutters think that CNN is deliberately trying to hurt Bernie? Doesn't that contradict the "CNN is actually liberal" CT?

A) I don't like the tactic of hiring people to blindly defend a political side, period. It's certainly possible for political insiders to have some important insights, but they should be talking about areas that they know about, and they should be out of the game anyway.
B) Lewandowski is different (worse than the usual bad practice) because he had an active non-disparagement agreement with Trump and was still being paid by the campaign. That's just ridiculously unethical. The line is blurry at best, but that just obliterates it. I'd compare Lord more to Brazile.

I can't see how one could conceivably think that showing raw footage of a rally is "an attempt to paint" the candidate in a bad light. And a campaign rally is the candidate making the case for himself in front of a crowd of supporters. Again, just wildly unethical to show that live.

Further, the coverage of the email story was way out of proportion to its significance to the election, and the undercoverage of issue coverage (essentially a complete ignoring of all coverage of substance) was another area where their choices were extremely helpful to Trump. I don't doubt that it was business-related (Trump majorly cut their taxes and has been driving their ratings), but that doesn't excuse it. I don't think any objective look at the situation backs up the view that they have a left-wing or pro-Democratic bias. Exactly the opposite.
