Classic Doom 1 & 2 chat

Hey, I finally beat it earlier today!

Man, you were NOT kidding when you said it was challenging. My first few attempts did not go well. On my first or second attempt, I backtracked too much through the lava and couldn't find anymore radiation suits so I was toast. On my next attempt, I made it all the way to the Archviles just beyond the large door with the "Exit" signs in front of it and couldn't kill them before they nuked my ass into oblivion. After that failure, I found and explored the little apartment ("Stop using my toilet!," LMAO!) only to be greeted by two Cyberdemon rockets to the face as soon as I tried to leave (Note to self: DO NOT step inside if the Cyberdemon is still kicking!).

I finally got the hang of the layout and managed to finish it (not without save-scumming through the last few encounters, I'll admit). I really liked how crazy and inventive some of the areas were (it reminded me of a traditional batshit-crazy Sandy Petersen map; evil traps galore), and there seemed to be plenty of health and ammo to keep me going throughout most of the map. I also liked how nonlinear the map was, and how there were a bunch of areas that looped back around to others, often times resulting in shortcuts.

I think the only three complaints I have are:
1.) The switches in the starting area are a little confusing (there's one that requires the yellow key for example, yet there's nothing on or near the switch that indicates that requirement)
2.) The relatively-lengthy lava pit absolutely demolishes your health, yet there are very few radiation suits and the only health pickups (with the exception of the single Megasphere at the start) are located at the very end of the pit--where you'll probably never make it if you're already hurt
3.) The final stretch with the Barons rising up from the ground followed by the two Archviles seems a little too cruel since the player has next to no room to maneuver and the only thing that can block the Archviles' devastating attacks--the small "exit" structure itself--is positioned right against the edge of the narrow landmass and thus can easily be "clogged" by Barons on both sides, in which case you're pretty much fucked (the only method of escape, the lava, is VERY bad news unless you're already doing really well on health/armor).

Overall I really enjoyed it. You should definitely try making more maps!
Thanks friend glad ya liked it. Thought I made it too crazy

I'll add a yellow key bar to the starting switch

Also I'll post a playthrough vid

Did you find all the secrets?

Ps do you play gzdoom or which? I saw your stronghold playthrough and the fireballs and lamps lit up in interesting ways

Also the megasphere is at the start of the acid run. Grab it and run to the end and still have 100 health and armour.

Or take radiation suit from blue key room or the secret hah

As for the end yeah that's rough hah hah

LOL. Just try and follow John Romero's rules and don't fall into the "Wolfenstein 3D" trap where you have room after room with identical floor/ceiling heights and you should be alright! I also recommend UDMF format unless you're just trying to be extra strict and abide by vanilla rules.

Let me know whenever you finish it. I'd love to check it out!
That's your YouTube channel? I had already watched and liked that video before I saw this post. Good stuff.

I found some of the secrets, but I never got all of 'em.

As for how I play: I always use GZDoom. The dynamic lights you're seeing can be enabled by simply checking "Load Lights" on the GZDoom launcher (at least for recent versions; I can't recall if old versions of the launcher had these checkboxes or not). I also have "Load Brightmaps" checked, though I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes.

Don't know if I'll make another map any time soon but I think I like it better than Brutal Breakout.

I find it calming and relaxing to make maps and really needed this last few days. When I was done I no longer cared about it lol, I'm just having fun mapping

holyhell wad. My best advice, run. Don't stop running. And don't get cornered.

We should get some sherdoggers to play some coop maps on zdaemon sometime.

Thats nuts bro hah

I haven't had a coop game in YEARS

Right now my computer is trash and I need a new one, it can't even handle Gzdoom, I still use Zdoom

I keep saying I'll get a new computer already but my current one won't die. My computers always died but this one lives on and we are having a hard time letting go hah ahh

Just beat it and had fun from start to finish!

I agree with you, I think it's better than your first map. I liked the hub format you came up with, and how the whole central area sort of gives way to reveal a massive hellish staircase near the end. I also liked that trippy outdoor area where the finale takes place. That part almost reminded me of The Spirit World, with a dash of Mt. Erebus!
