Classic Doom 1 & 2 chat

speaking of TNT - @Chubz did you know theres a level in TNT called Stronghold? It super sucks
I did not! DAMNIT, I hate using the same name as an IWAD map. I may end up changing the name, or just adding a prefix or suffix to it.

I recently completed another play through of Doom II last month. I noticed a significant increase in difficulty once I reached level I think level 27, Monster Condo. I can’t imagine that one on a pistol start at ultraviolence
A few different people consider that one the hardest in 2.

I don’t think it’s the hardest to pistol start but it’s not easy forsure.

So since I posted that message I did yet another play through of Doom II, this time on Ultraviolence and I didn’t find Monster Condo comparatively much harder than on Hurt Me Plenty. Still a hard map, but not a super steep increase in difficulty over any of the preceding maps.

Honestly, for my ultraviolence play through I actually found map 10, Refueling Base the hardest.

Thanks man. The big Caco ambush around the pool of lava was definitely the biggest change I made. I felt the short route around the lava was just too forgiving before, so a sudden swarm of enemies makes things extra panicky. The two new Hell Knights down in the "double Archvile" area can also play a pretty significant role in making the map tougher if the Archviles decide to resurrect them, but it's more of a coin flip than anything.

I think I'm more or less done with the map at this point, other than small tweaks and coming up with some sort of a different name (I might just call it "The Stronghold," with "The" helping separate it from the TNT map).

Name it stronger hold hahaha

one suggestion I do have is remember when I jumped across that pit to avoid taking the long way around

how about after you get the plasma gun and jump down some teleporters open up at the pit or something to help to get across

@Chubz you inspired me to make a map just for fun

It will be terrible

LOL. Just try and follow John Romero's rules and don't fall into the "Wolfenstein 3D" trap where you have room after room with identical floor/ceiling heights and you should be alright! I also recommend UDMF format unless you're just trying to be extra strict and abide by vanilla rules.

Let me know whenever you finish it. I'd love to check it out!

Nice video friend - damn you have a decent channel hah hah

I think I did some of these rules in mine but my level isn't so serious - it's something silly I'm just playing around with and quite hard on UV

When it's done it will support all game settings and should work correctly - but it's going to be kind of bizarre

Working title: The Room

I tend to make levels on the quick cause it's just fun to make em

I think I speak for everyone when I say if the map isn’t shaped like a giant paper clip that we’ll all be pretty disappointed.

aw sheet

It's actually really random and I just keep adding to it with no plan - spontaneous map creation - and it's starting to get confusing ha hah

I will stick my clip calling card in it tho don't worry

When I make levels I tend to make UV way too hard ... and ITYTD and HNTR way too easy

Medium setting Hurt Me Plenty would probably be the desired gameplay

Ok I think I'm calling it done after testing it over and over - all difficulty settings work etc

I think it's quite challenging for a more advanced player - def helps to have a strategy get a feel for the map. As I know it I can beat it in 15 minutes but it may take you much longer

I am excited to see how you deal with this level and to hear your thoughts - please be honest - I may release it fully afterwards unless I want to change something

Map is called Brutal Breakout

(naming them is the hardest part eh)

Starts off as kinda escape room and builds to something much bigger.

Synopsis : You wake up after getting too drunk and eating to much Kraft Dinner. Where the hell am I - I gotta get outta here. Are these MY pants?

Hey, I finally beat it earlier today!

Man, you were NOT kidding when you said it was challenging. My first few attempts did not go well. On my first or second attempt, I backtracked too much through the lava and couldn't find anymore radiation suits so I was toast. On my next attempt, I made it all the way to the Archviles just beyond the large door with the "Exit" signs in front of it and couldn't kill them before they nuked my ass into oblivion. After that failure, I found and explored the little apartment ("Stop using my toilet!," LMAO!) only to be greeted by two Cyberdemon rockets to the face as soon as I tried to leave (Note to self: DO NOT step inside if the Cyberdemon is still kicking!).

I finally got the hang of the layout and managed to finish it (not without save-scumming through the last few encounters, I'll admit). I really liked how crazy and inventive some of the areas were (it reminded me of a traditional batshit-crazy Sandy Petersen map; evil traps galore), and there seemed to be plenty of health and ammo to keep me going throughout most of the map. I also liked how nonlinear the map was, and how there were a bunch of areas that looped back around to others, often times resulting in shortcuts.

I think the only three complaints I have are:
1.) The switches in the starting area are a little confusing (there's one that requires the yellow key for example, yet there's nothing on or near the switch that indicates that requirement)
2.) The relatively-lengthy lava pit absolutely demolishes your health, yet there are very few radiation suits and the only health pickups (with the exception of the single Megasphere at the start) are located at the very end of the pit--where you'll probably never make it if you're already hurt
3.) The final stretch with the Barons rising up from the ground followed by the two Archviles seems a little too cruel since the player has next to no room to maneuver and the only thing that can block the Archviles' devastating attacks--the small "exit" structure itself--is positioned right against the edge of the narrow landmass and thus can easily be "clogged" by Barons on both sides, in which case you're pretty much fucked (the only method of escape, the lava, is VERY bad news unless you're already doing really well on health/armor).

Overall I really enjoyed it. You should definitely try making more maps!
