Chuck Liddell vs LHW division of 2020

Goddam chuck LEVELLED Mezger with that punch

Goddam chuck LEVELLED Mezger with that punch

Chuck had KO power in both hands and feet. And man, did he swing hard. He stood in a pocket with Vitor and got the better of that exchange.
When he let those hands go, it was usually all over. People used to defend those shots and still got KOd

lol, imagine thinking washed up Gus, ancient Glover, MW Smith and Santos, Jan Nobodywitz, Corey Anderson, etc would be somehow bad matchups for Chuck.

Oh so you're a boxer that cant notice the difference in jan and chuck's striking, especially in straight punches that were practically non existant in chucks "boxing" maybe thats why the guy got slept by any explosive black guy like rampage twice and rashad.
He was a brawler with a granite chin and agression.

Who has Jan faced and won who is impressive?

No really, list them.

Washed up Rockhold and Jacare moving up from MW?

Good question, TS. Chuck was at times infuriating to watch, as he sprawled and picked his shot and waited to counter - but when he found the other guy’s chin, it was over. I can honestly see him stuffing Corey’s or OSP’s shot and then KOing them; not getting flustered in the face of Walker’s or Ion’s shenanigans, and straight up banging with Glover (even though they’re friends and probably wouldn’t fight).

Reyes/Santos/Jan/Smith/Volkan are all good but not exceptional, and those fights could go either way.

Long story long, I think he would do reasonably well - he maybe wouldn’t be champion in the era of Jones* or DC, but he would be a contender.

Chuck Liddell is the former UFC Light Heavyweight World Champion (with 4 title defences).

Liddell is 1-0 against Jeff Monson.

Liddell is 1-0 against Kevin Randleman.

Liddell is 1-0 against Murilo Bustamante.

Liddell is 1-0 against Guy Mezger.

Liddell is 1-1 against Jeremy Horn.

Liddell is 1-0 against Vitor Belfort.

Liddell is 1-0 against Alistair Overeem.

Liddell is 2-0 against Renato Sobral.

Liddell is 2-1 against Couture.

Liddell is 2-1 against Ortiz.

Liddell is 1-0 against Wanderlei Silva.

When Liddell was in his best condition, he had many accomplishments. Obviously, anything is possible.

It's feasible that Liddell (in his best condition) could do well in the year 2020.

I wouldn't say that Liddell was one-dimensional either. After all, Liddell has a purple belt in Brasilian Jiu-jitsu.

People saying he had good TDD. yeah that was compared to the wrestling at the time, where mma wrestling was very much cut and pasted from high school ect. If you can’t appreciate how the meta has changed and doing stuff like wall walking and sprawling hard isn’t the be all end all TDD anymore, I don’t know what to say.
Also chuck hit hard but having a ‘granite chin’ as your first line of defence is not a long lived strategy.

Depends on if he would have his chin. I've been rewatching old fights on fightpass recently and ol Chuck got hit quite a lot, even against a guy like Tito. Of course he was a "take one to give one guy" but in hindsight this is really telling.

With chin - still a beast. You're not taking him down and if you do he's just going to get up and knock your head off.

With declining chin - not so good .

Of course prime Chuck had granite chin.

It depends a little on which version of Chuck your talking about for me as I think the Chuck of say 01-03 was quite different from 04-06, after the loss to Randy I think you saw a significant shift in his game, keeping his hands lower, backing up less to pressure to avoid someone doing to him what Randy did in the 1st fight. The early Chuck was maybe never a technical master but he was clearly more mobile and defence minded than the latter one.

People seem to forget chuck got out struck and out worked by Jardine. All jardine did was basically not stand still in front of chuck, use kicks and straight punches. Chuck had poor footwork and stood with his hands by his hips loading up on big looping punches.
A modern, disciplined fighter using movement and straight hitting would most likely give prime chuck absolute fits.

Prime Chuck could take the punch, his opponents couldn't

Chuck beat many good strikers.

Funny you say Glover. Glover was Chuck's training partner. Chuck was the UFC Champ and Glover was the fighter on the rise. Even Glover says prime Chuck is the best LHW he has seen and says a prime Chuck would KO Jones and every current LHW.

If Santos and Reyes can land on Jones and arguably beat him, then I think a young Chuck could do the same. Chuck has more power than those guys too.

LOL

They both fought Rashad and Rampage.

Cmon now

Prime Chuck could take the punch, his opponents couldn't
but Jardine didn’t win by hitting hard (although he did drop chuck iirc)
And was a bit chinny himself and chuck still couldn’t find the KO shot.

This reminded me how Chuck's reign reflected the sad state of the UFC lhw division.

I think Chucky was already past his prime when he lost to the Techno VIking

he knocked Overeem out, who went on to win the K-1 grand prix and fight for a UFC title. he's also still a top 10 HW currently.

He knocked out a gassed overeem with a looping overhand Remm should've seen from a mile away.

LHW Reem was nothing special.

LHW Reem was extraordinary fighter for 5 minutes.

Chuck also competed during the era when LHW was at it's strongest, when it was the marquee division in MMA. LHW is one of the weaker divisions today.
yeah the LHW division was great but a lot of if not most of the best were in PRIDE not the UFC. Chuck obviously wouldn't have been champion if Rampage was in the UFC.

Edit: and yes I know Bellator has some very good LHWs but none would be likely to ever win the UFC title.
