Movies Christopher Nolan's THE ODYSSEY (IMAX Tickets on Sale July 17 - One Year Before Film's Release, post #128)

Update: December 23, 2024

Christopher Nolan's Next Film Revealed to Be a Mythic Epic Adaptation of THE ODYSSEY

The speculation over Christopher Nolan's next movie has come to an end. Universal revealed Monday that Nolan will adapt The Odyssey, the epic poem from Homer that follows Odysseus’ journey home after the Trojan war.

“Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” said the studio. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron star in the feature.

Nolan has delved with period pieces before, including best piture winner Oppenheimer, which told the story of the creation of the Atomic Bomb, and The Prestige, an adaptation of Christopher Priest’s novel centering on two rival magicians amid the backdrop of 1890s London.

But The Odyssey is a marked change of pace for the filmmaker. Homer’s epic poem dates back to the 8th century BC and tells of gods, goddesses and monsters — the type of material foreign to Nolan’s work so far. Still, the filmmaker has dealt with plenty of fantastical material, including making Batman believable for post-9/11 audiences, and bringing realism to sci-fi notions such as shared dreams in Inception and intergalactic travel in Interstellar.

Nolan began his year winning his first Oscars in his decades-long career thanks to Oppenheimer, which netted him statues for best picture and best director. Nolan ended it with another honor, officially being knighted by King Charles in a ceremony last week.

Poor choice. There is no way to improve on the GOAT:

I mean...thats a big swing post Oppenheimer. This may be his first flop

love him or hate him (i personally tend to caution closer to the latter end of the spectrum), the dude simply doesn’t make flops. if Nolan is great at anything, it’s making his populist blockbusters feel like cinematic events.

Zendaya and Anne Hathaway Join the Cast of Christopher Nolan's Next Film

Christopher Nolan is adding more A-listers to his latest film, with Zendaya and Anne Hathaway joining the cast of the director’s next feature.

Zendaya will join her Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland in the untitled Nolan feature that will also star Matt Damon. As for Hathaway, she will be reuniting with Nolan, having previously worked with the director on the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises.

Plot details are being kept under wraps. Nolan wrote the script and is directing the project, which Universal Pictures will distribute. The studio has set a release date of July 17, 2026.

Nolan is producing alongside producing partner and wife Emma Thomas for their Syncopy banner.

The new feature reunites Nolan with the studio that made his drama Oppenheimer, which earned a staggering $976 million worldwide. Oppenheimer was the first time the filmmaker worked with Universal, a relationship forged after Nolan publicly split with longtime home Warner Bros. in late 2020. While Oppenheimer was picked up by Universal in an open auction setting, this new project ended up going straight to the studio, according to sources.

Zendaya is currently in the middle of an awards season that has her campaigning with two films, Dune: Part 2 and Challengers. She is currently filming the A24 feature The Drama, starring opposite Robert Pattinson and Alana Haim.

Hathaway was last seen in the popular Amazon title The Idea of You. Her upcoming slate includes the David Lowery film Mother Mary and Warner Bros. title Flowervale Street from Bad Robot.

I don't get the Zendaya hype. There's way better looking women here in the Bay Area working at your average Starbucks. She's a dime a dozen out here. <Fedor23>
