She was attacked because she was a volunteer working on what looks to be a project for new low cost units for temporary housing for the homeless. There were a bunch of Chinese people at the meeting, some of whom were angry about the project. Chinese buyers have been snapping up property for the past 2 decades as investments and I think they were angry about a homeless shelter in their area driving down property prices.
