What can this thing do that a normal ICBM can't do?

Don't know enough about the technology. Surprised more people aren't discussing it though.

faster - EDIT, i mistakenly wrote it like this when i meant to write more maneuverable. ICBM is faster in a straight line flying. hurr durr.
it can go around the world in low space orbit before aiming for the target which combined with hypersonic speed means it's hard as fuck to defend against
not just a flying rock basically, it's more elusive

in the space of one week you had us officials say they are behind in computer power and now in missile design. doesn't look good

They are slower than ICBMs.

I saw the news yesterday. They missed the target by 24 miles, which not even a nuclear warhead will compensate for that. That's a failed test and the media is hyping it up like China is taking over.

They're at least 2 decades away from being able to achieve parity with US.

The solution = we should them more money.

But what is the gender of the rocket? That the most important thing!!!!

This, making an hypersonic missile is no big deal, when it fucking misses the target. LOL
It's also a glider, not a scramjet.

In resume, a ballistic missile flies really fast and high but becomes unguided during reentry, following a, duh, ballistic trajectory.
A cruise missile can be maneuvered throughout the whole flight but they're somewhat slow.
A hypersonic missile would be a really fast missile that can be maneuvered. It can be made in two ways. As a scramjet or as a glider. A scramjet is a supersonic ramjet, it's hard to pull off, but it would be very efficient. A glider would work as a rocket, which is not very efficient, and then you would use wings to glide and hence maneuver. You would be flying really high so you could still keep your velocity after the rocket burns up.
It's a low tech approach.
It's like these chinese carriers with a ramp, it kind of works, but it's not very good. Instead of developing a catapult they put a ski ramp on their aircraft carriers so the plane would be launched a little higher.

The chinese had a really fast rocket, 1945s technology, then they used a glider, 1900s technology, and missed. OK, a hypersonic glider is still a feat of engineering but nothing the US, or probably the UK, Russia or even France, couldn't pull off.

it doesnt change a thing...

mutually assured destruction would still happen

even if they strike first

Ya, the only advantage of using a glider would be not knowing the intended target until it was too late. Oddly, It must first be launched into orbit which would put the entire US defense system on alert so the element of surprise is kind of lost.
