Chael Sonnen striking style

He claims to have been a Golden Gloves boxer, but keep in mind that can mean many things. There are brackets based on experience, so you can have 0-3 amateur fights and fight in the sub-novice class and still say you went to the golden gloves tournament. Having 10 + fights is where things start to get competitive in my opinion, based on what I've seen. When guys have 20-30 fights with mostly wins they usually have some serious skills, and can be competitive in the State Tournaments in the open class. I trained with two guys that were very good, had over 30 fights and only won at the regional level.

I'm not sure Chael's amateur record was, and I never thought his striking really looked terrible. Seems like he can box a bit, but I'm also not so sure that he was a high level golden gloves guy.

its seemed like pretty basic wrestler low kicks and one two stuff, but it was all just to setup a clinch or takedown.

he was better than usual vs anderson though, i expect he really worked a lot of boxing for that fight.

Chael has some real underrated striking tbh, the only time I recall him being hurt on the feet was when he ran face first into Wanderlei's fist

He just uses his striking to set up his takedowns, and it tends to work pretty well

I believe his style is called "hitting your opponent repeatedly with pillows..."

But, I could be wrong.

That is called "the Edmund Tarverdyan" level of striking.

ask Paulo Filho... if he remembers...

Filho was looking at other things at the time anyway.

Fuck, i forgot about that fight. One of the wierdest fights in MMA history.

Opiates will do that to a guy.

Chael: Im a boxer but we (mma) don't want to go down the path of the way promotional boxing is done with the Ali act.

He has professional striking.

He isn’t blowing anyone’s socks off, but he has fundamentals covered and avoids giant fuck ups other than that spinning back fist against Silva

He plays it safe and sticks to boxing basics until he finds a chance to work the takedown. It's simple, but effective and allows him to best utilize what he is good at which is gaining top control and landing ground and pound.

No need to get fancy if stand-up isn't his strong suit. He probably learned a tough lesson when he went for that spinning back-fist vs the spider.

Well, Chael P is actually undefeated as a pro in every single organization of the sports of boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, karate, kung fu, taekwondo, as well as (believe it or not) fencing. So yeah, his striking is actually quite epic.

Man, that's freaky incredible!
My brain can't even process how to do that.
stand up.
Throw your right arm as if your had the ball in your three finger's grip.
As your arm completes the circle and releases the ball, your body will have rotated and jumped to your right, over the ball, rotating over your right shoulder.
