He claims to have been a Golden Gloves boxer, but keep in mind that can mean many things. There are brackets based on experience, so you can have 0-3 amateur fights and fight in the sub-novice class and still say you went to the golden gloves tournament. Having 10 + fights is where things start to get competitive in my opinion, based on what I've seen. When guys have 20-30 fights with mostly wins they usually have some serious skills, and can be competitive in the State Tournaments in the open class. I trained with two guys that were very good, had over 30 fights and only won at the regional level.
I'm not sure Chael's amateur record was, and I never thought his striking really looked terrible. Seems like he can box a bit, but I'm also not so sure that he was a high level golden gloves guy.
