I think you're thinking of some movie.

The attempt to understand the basic "building blocks" of nature, of why particles have mass and don't all zip along at the speed of light (like the photon) is, if there's any reason, why we are here.

As far as Hawking and his more "out there" theorizing, well, theoretical physics requires a big imagination. Some of what he likes to babble about is science fiction, that he himself would categorize as such.

Why do we want to "understand" it? So we can use it. What are we gonna do if we find other planets and life? Use them. As Francis Bacon said, we have to obey nature to command it.

Why are we so interested in these big projects? They all eventually are applied to war. We have guided bombs and misguided men. Like MLK said, we worship at the altar of science because science creates anxieties and dangers that science can never solve.
 
Those bastards better be careful not to break the planet or break the universe.

They like doing that sort of thing. The destroyer of worlds statue is out front but that isn't all they have done that I guess they felt was clever or funny. If you go to google Maps and type in the search bar 1st Trumpet and hit enter, it takes you to CERN. The trumpets in the book of revelation herald the apocalypse.

Look at the names of the loops or "experiments."

Alice for example means A Large Ion Collider Experiment. Its also this Alice, down a rabbit hole into another place or time or dimension.

They also have some tablets inside CERN that are displayed in different languages, some of them ancient dead languages. I'm not sure what their meaning is. I can't seem to locate a translation.

We didn't destroy this planet, we are insignificant to it. All we have done is bully other primitive organisms around. The earth is doing just fine. We can't even affect its pattern of movement.

that is odd - I like to think I'm level headed but just seems very odd to have that statue there. Perhaps destroying old knowledge and ways of thinking?

btw did that google thing and it did take me to cern.
