Indie Celeste ... probably one of the best recent games .... Also, a Soul's comparison

I picked it up on steam when it was like 2 euro or something. Thought it was a good deal but at first the game was giving me watered down Katana 0 or Super Meat Boy vibes. I kept instinctively trying to reverse time. I put it on hold for quite a while without thinking about it.

Surprise surprise I do some research and learn it has been consistently rated 10/10, so I decided to give it another bash. I am enjoying it and currently in the Celeste hotel.

What really kicked it off was the mirror boss chase scene in Ch 2. It highlights exactly why I can't get into Soul's games. The boss chases you across multiple scenes putting preasure on you to finish the puzzles. There is no stuck pattern for how the boss approaches and you need to use proper planning and timing in order to break through to the next scene. You can also approach each puzzle in a manner of your own preference. You die you just start the scene again. These sort of battles create a rush that I just don't get with Souls and it doesn't have the cult of ''It is soooo difficult'' behind it. It's all about figuring things out and progressing. I never once got that feeling from a Soul's game, which feels much more patterned. Celeste also allows for trial and error but you can also wing many sections with skill and little planning. It's very direct in its difficulty too and doesn't try to impress with elongated visual attacks.

I enjoyed this game and beat it some years ago.

The story, I remember, is one with a message that tackles self-esteem and mental health. The meat of course is rather that it's a Genghis Khan-grade platformer.

After beating it, I recall being able to complete only some of the b-sides, or optional FU content. Very tough. Awesome game.

Excellent platformer, albeit tough as all hell. One of the GOAT soundtracks too.

1. Glad you had a rush playing it. That's awesome
2. Don't compare two vastly different genres especially based on ONE "battle".
3. Believe me, Celeste has an annoying cult fanbase so that is moot.
4. Never by any means use IGN as a reference.

im glad yall are saying its a tough nut because i thought i just fucking sucked lol. god some parts had me stuck, and i refuse to look it up, im stubborn this way. i can't remember where i last was in the game, it's been awhile. i either beat it or was near to. very fun, challenging, and cute, but it's another game i find peaceful . . . until its a boss fight then i get all into it gettin rowdy lol.

Oh', it's pretty damn tough. Especially if you go for all the strawberries and hearts. The base game itself is no joke, either. I think it's Chapter 5 or 6 where you have to lead this thing through a bunch of stages, while flipping switches and whatnot, that took some extreme patience to get through. Platforming on the peaks near the end is insane. The boss fights are all pretty damn tough as well, especially the one where you face your alter ego. The hotel guy is an asshole too.

All the places I had to check a guide just made me realise how abundantly obvious it was.

There was one place with a moving block. When you stand on it first you can't control it but then after a certain point you can, for no reason. That one was just annoying because you'd have no way of knowing to remain on the block to control it after that point.

They are comparable for me because I often point out I don't get the same hit from Soul's games that other games have. I think other games do a lot of things Souls tries to do much better, and if not for their marketing campaign and fandom wouldn't have the same traction. I'm not a hater of the series just don't understand the hype around them.

Perfectly fine to not like something
