"Cauliflower ear tells me you're stupid, not tough."

Author wants white belts to start tapping their knuckles as well.

I've heard that taping your fingers can make them weaker, and that you should only do it when hurt or competing.

It makes sense to me, at least for stuff like knee or back braces it's well known that using them can weaken/harm your body.

well, I have my own theory about tapping knuckles.

It makes your grip so strong but then it is not natural and you just end up putting more stress on your wrist etc..

You end relying on a strong grip and end up not adjusting your game.

For an example, 10 years ago people thought a strong guard is someone that can keep closed guard for 5 minutes.
People used to squeeze and lift barrel for 5 minutes to strenghen their legs = strong guard.

But nowdays we look at strong guard as someone that can easily transition between different guards without getting passed.

The guy who wrote the article doesn't train.
Why does he think that cauliflower ear is dangerous and causes hearing loss?
Makes no sense.
Both my ears are smashed and I hear fine.

I have heard mother's saying they don't want their kids to wrestle because they don't want their kids to get ugly ears. Makes the sport look bad to average people, especially when it is usually easily preventable just by wearing headgear.

Also, the girls don't love it either.

Sadly, taping your fingers does next to nothing for them strength wise. (Nor does it make them weaker.)

It does provide a somewhat reasonable amount of support to the pulleys. (Not ligaments, and nothing in the forearm) Not enough to keep you from being injured, but enough to possibly get you through training or a comp.

Many people "feel stronger" with tape on. We have learned that this is most certainly not true. If anything, the limited range of motion fucks you a bit. The reality is that you're getting neurological (physiological?) feedback from the pressure of the tape around the joint and it feels like you can grip tighter.

So yeah tape is a tool, not a crutch. If your fingers hurt and keep taping and training, you're going to have a bad time eventually.
The reality is that if your fingers hurt, you need to ice them and rest. Period. Tape is a bandaid. Literally.

I tape my pinkie and ring fingers because they hurt the most. I'm starting to get concerned because in the mornings I can barely make a fist because all my finger joints hurt so bad. I'm gonna try icing them after training.

I don't disagree with you but sometimes headgear isn't enough to stop cauliflower. Also that is not the point the author is trying to make he says it's unhealthy and you're stupid if you have cauliflower.

They won't get weaker, but yeah, if you tape constantly, the ligaments in your fingers won't develop much strength. I'm rocking two torn ligaments in both of my ring fingers, from shorter randori sessions where I didn't bother to tape, so I have to tape mine (I'm using 1in tape for that). I saw a hand specialist, and she recommended that I do the buddy system, where I taped my ring and middle fingers together, which forces my ligaments to still stretch and keep ROM while they heal.

Otherwise, I only tape them during big open mats (which can last for hours of nonstop randori) or when I compete.

I tape them exactly like Xande does at the start of this video (thank you Zankou for constantly posting this in the judo thread), and it allows me full ROM, but also allows the cross tape to take the load of most of the pressure put on the fingers.

If someone wanted to look perfect after training they should not chose grappling arts

Yup, I can't even remember all the times I've not bothered hitting on women when I'm out due to huge red marks and bruises on my face from grappling.

Never had cauliflower ear though but I do get what feels like bruises fairly often .

Well, most of us were stupid when we were young. It's easy to think cauli is no big deal or even want it when you are a teenager. When you get older and have to sport those ears in a suit and tie, it feels a bit different. But it's really not a big deal unless you have some sort of blockage in your ear canal itself.

Headgear is a lot cheaper than plastic surgery, though, so wear them.

some of us are still stupid.

like you, for example.

Nice tape method! That's cool. Buddy system works great. I used to buddy tape mine during regular everyday life to give my injured ones a break and make sure it was actually resting. People use their fingers for everything.

lol at cauliflower being a major health concern. If anything eating your vegetables are healthy for you.

Same here, just purchased that tape from Ithaca also. I feel like i have 70 year old hands

My ears are pretty damn sore right now. But I did escape that triangle! Lol!

I started taping my fingers at training a few weeks ago. I'm a professional musician and about a month ago I started getting joint pain in my knuckles after gi training. It was affecting my guitar playing so my instructor suggested taping to support the joints and they have improved dramatically since. I don't have anywhere near as much pain now and I tape every gi training session (3-4 times a week).
