Cases of fighters leap frogging a bad match up?

Francis Ngannou ducking Derrick Lewis and have him fight Gane and losing the title shot.

That was even more embarrassing than Ngano shitting himself when he actually got in the cage with Lewis and getting intimidated by the scarier manliest fighter.

Conor kind of leapfrogged a whole division.
Masvidal was the last minute plan C after Giblert Burns and Leon Scott fell through
Was and he wasnt, he was one of the first options but priced himself out, when the original fight fell then they called him again with more money.

Kudos. This is a new and refreshing thread. I think the worst would be Brock. Even though he proved he should be at the top. The only other one I could think of was when Faber fought Ronda for the new belt. I mean, c’mon…how many chances will the UFC give him.

Rose dodged Claudia hard when Claudia was still a problem. Practically nobody calls out anyone so when they do the fight is usually made. Claudia called out Rose. Crickets. Bad style matchup for Rose. Keep feeding her stylistically favorable opponents. Took like another... jesus christ 6 years before Rose finally has to fight another pressure fighter.

LOL Gadelha didn't call out Rose until mid-2017 when it was obvious that Rose was going to get the next title shot.

It was a bunch of cope because she was butthurt that she'd already lost to Joanna twice and knew that the UFC wasn't going to put her back in.

It would've been idiotic for Rose to accept the call out when she was already going to get another title fight.

Ignorance is bliss buddy. Enjoy it.
Put some respect on rose. How can you talk shit about her, when she beat 2 best fighters in division 2 times, to prove everone 1fight its not fluke. Weili is monster, i dont know what she is gona fight next, but she will clean the floor with this lady. No metter who is it, Dern, Rodrigez, Carla or jj. If i was Rose, i dogde Andrade, its worst matchup for Rose.

This is a discussing about skipping over stylistically bad opponents. If you don't understand Rose's matchups then you have no idea what you are talking about.

When was the Claudia call out? Did it make sense in terms of pairing them up at the time or was it just a call out. Because if the fight made sense then I can see that. But if it didn’t then I’m not sure it’s leapfrogging as much.

Joe Soto who fought for the world title in his UFC debut!

Can't find the exact time of the callout but I did find what Claudia said about Rose being the #1 contender at the time and how she didn't want to face her and wanted Waterson instead. Can't imagine why.

He got the title shot because he was willing to step in on short notice, fly to Abu Dhabi, cut weight and save the card.
No, he was offered the title shot before Burns by virtue of the 2019 he had. He then had a quibble with the UFC over how much he was going to make for that fight, so Dana did the whole "Masvidal doesn't want Usman" thing and gave it to Burns. Then when Burns fell out, they called Masvidal last minute, offered him what he had asked for, and he was on his way to Abu Dhabi.

As a Tai Tuivasa fan I was rapt to see him get the Derrick Lewis fight, it’s one I’ve wanted to see for years and I think it will be all action.

I then realised that with a win Tuivasa maybe gets a title shot and will avoid Curtis Blaydes who is a bad match up and would wrestlefuck Tai to a decision.

Are there any examples of guys who have won titles while avoiding someone dangerous in the lead up? The other one that springs to mind is Whittaker before he fought Romero first, I can’t remember when Mousasi left the UFC exactly but I was glad Rob avoided that one, I think he would struggle against Moose.

Khabib dodged Tony and got the much easier path of Raging Al (who wasn't close to deserving a title shot at all)

Keep reading the thread. I explicitly said this.
