Congrats to Larson for getting the part.

Not excited for this movie one bit. Captain Marvel? Not a popular character to the non comic book fan one bit. I myself have no knowledge of the character except that she was known as Ms. Marvel then got her name switched to Captain Marvel which sounds like a mans name or makes me think of a male super hero. I would just focus on the real popular characters that are more known to the general public. That's my 2¢

They've already introduced basically every major character they holds rights to, and Carol is a big player in today's Marvel landscape.

We've got Iron Man, Cap, Hulk, Spidey, Thor, Panther, Widow, Hawkeye, Pym, Ant-Man, Daredevil, Punisher, Luke, Iron Fist, etc..already introduced and they don't own X-Men or FF, so realistically what other characters are left to introduce that are bigger names than Captain Marvel?

Luke and Iron Fist two others that don't need movies

They made GotG, Dr. Strange and fucking Ant Man work .. plus captain Marvel has badass powers.. iirc Rogue permanently stole her powers. And Marvel wants a standalone character whose female to compete with Wonder Woman.

CAPTAIN MARVEL's Origin Story Will Be Different from Comics, Avoids GREEN LANTERN Comparison

Captain-Marvel-Carol-Danvers-081116-Dragonlord.jpg

Captain Marvel co-writer Nicole Perlman spoke out about some of the challenges of cracking Carol Danvers' story for the big screen on the Any Time with Vin Forte podcast, with her also addressing the pressures of writing Marvel Studios' first female-toplined movie.

"I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do," said Perlman.

Brie Larson has been cast in the role of Carol Danvers, who in the comics is an ace fighter pilot who eventually retires from the Air Force with the rank of Colonel to join NASA as its youngest head of security. Through a freak encounter with some alien Kree technology, she is transformed into a half-Kree and given superhuman abilities, becoming Captain Marvel.

Meanwhile, In DC Comics lore, Hal Jordan is an Air Force test pilot before encountering a dying alien, receiving the alien's power ring to gain amazing powers and become a member of the Green Lantern Corp.

"There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character," continued DeConnick. "We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time."

CAPTAIN MARVEL Director Narrowed Down to Three Candidates

Captain-Marvel-Carol-Danvers-082416-Dragonlord.jpg

Captain Marvel is slowly zeroing in on a director. Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria are on the shortlist for the highly coveted job of helming Marvel Studio's first female-centric superhero movie, several sources tell THR.

Sources caution that there may be names yet to surface. A decision won't be made anytime soon as Marvel is being very deliberate in its search, according to sources. The movie has a release date of March 8, 2019.

Insiders tell THR that the next stage will involve Marvel giving a treatment and documents to the directors in order to prepare a detailed presentation.

The three contenders were whittled from a shortlist of about a handful of contenders, which also included Jennifer Kent, helmer of the indie horror hit The Babadook, and Jennifer Yuh, director of Kung Fu Panda 2.Marvel has made finding a woman to direct the movie key in the search.

The three top choices have diverse backgrounds in film.

Caro broke through with 2002's Whale Rider, the Oscar-nominated generational drama that looked at a young woman trying to break through a male-oriented culture. She followed that up with North Country, a rape drama that starred Charlize Theron. She also directed McFarland, USA and has The Zookeeper’s Wife, starring Jessica Chastain, in the can.

Glatter hails from the television world, a side of the entertainment industry where female directors are better represented than in film. She is the main director on Homeland, the hit spy thriller from Showtime that stars Claire Danes, and is up for the outstanding director in a drama series honor at September's Emmy Awards. Among her numerous helming credits are episodes of Ray Donovan, The Newsroom, True Blood, Mad Men, ER and The West Wing.

Scafaria may seem like the outlier here but actually follows many of Marvel's patterns. She made a name for herself as a writer of quirky material — Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist was her first writing credit — and wrote and made her feature directorial debut with Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which starred Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. Scafaria also wrote and directed The Meddler, the semi-autobiographical dramedy which starred Rose Byrne and Susan Sarandon that was released by Sony Pictures Classics earlier this year.

CAPTAIN MARVEL Director Shortlist Adds Rebecca Thomas

Rebecca-Thomas-Captain-Marvel-Director-Dragonlord.jpg

Last week, we learned that Marvel Studios has narrowed their directorial search down to three candidates for the Captain Marvel movie, and now a new report reveals a fourth name in the bunch.

According to Jeff Snider, Electrick Children director Rebecca Thomas has join the fray as a final contender for the gig. Thomas joins the previously reported names, Niki Caro, Lorene Scafaria, and Lesli Linka Glatter.

Thomas is already attached to two other major studio films: Universal’s live-action The Little Mermaid, which is set to star Chloe Grace Moretz as well as the John Green adaptation Looking for Alaska for Paramount.

However, neither project has the official green light from their respective studios and Captain Marvel is the opportunity of a lifetime, so it’s easy to see why Thomas might jump over to the project should she land the gig.

'Electrick Children' Helmer Rebecca Thomas Added to the Shortlist for 'Captain Marvel' Directors

I've always wondered how much control these 1st time big budget blockbuster directors actually have. How much are they actually directing and how much is it Fiege and co shadow directing? Can't see them risking inexperienced directors like those in the list pulling a Trank.

For every Russo Bros or James Gunn, we get Alan Taylor.

Last edited:
based on resume should be Lesli Glatter or Niki Caro
i could see Lorne Scafarina getting it though. never even heard of anything that Rebecca has done.

Malaysian Actress Raja Ilya Reveals She Will Appear in a Marvel Studios Project

Raja-Ilya-Captain-Marvel-021817a-Dragonlord.jpg

While speaking to Star2 to promote her latest movie, Soulmate Hingga Jannah, Malaysian actress Raja Ilya let slip that she'll be appearing in an upcoming Marvel Studios project.

Though she didn't provide many details, Ilya said she'd be flying to Hollywood in "about six months" after first undergoing extensive martial arts traing with none other than The Raid and Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor Yayan Ruhian.

Though this is just a guess, the time-frame definitely points to the movie being Captain Marvel, as that will most likely be commencing production towards the end of the year or very early in 2018. Whatever the project turns out to be, Ilya probably won't have a substantial role in it - however, the fact that she's training so hard does suggest that her character will be involved in a few action scenes at the very least.

If the actress turns out to be playing Abigail Brand or a S.W.O.R.D. agent or is part of some sort enhanced special forces, Marvel probably read my script.

It would make a lot of people happy if Marvel was reading your scripts.

You might have to start writing DC scripts before the Key Grip drops out of the upcoming Batman movie.
