Can someone explain to me how Max still has the BMF belt?

The BMF title is an excuse for the UFC to hype up non-title fights. It doesn't follow rules or reason.

Poirier hasnt won the BMF belt, but he is also a former interim champion, the only two that sort of fit your description are Masvidal and Nate Diaz.

I'm saying right now that Max may be sliding into that also. To his credit, he was a champion and is different than guys like Masvidal and Nate.

Nate and Masvidal have had very good careers but there are levels to this. Max is an all-time great.

is normal... i had the intercontinental belt back in the day and got a title shot for the dubya dubya world championship belt but only the world championship belt was on the line that day. the script had me lose i came up short that night but still kept my IC title cause only the world title was on the line. 1 way streets as far as titles being on the line champ vs champ wrasslin storylines fights happen all the time.

It's not a regular title, and I'm pretty sure that every champ that wins a belt get to keep a copy of the belt. Besides, it's all just a marketing tool to juice sales.

The way I look at it, it’s kinda like the old intercontinental belt in wwf. It’s not the real sought after championship but it’s still kinda shows that they are pretty good. I also think it’s only supposed to be put up for certain match ups. Basically fights where Dana knows they are just going to slug it out with no takedowns or submission attempts. I guess look at it as the belt for that particular unspoken rule set. Even if they lose they still keep it because that fight wasn’t using that rule set. At least that’s the mental gymnastics I have to do to make it all make some semblance of sense.

First off... All belts are Mcguffins created with specific criteria. I get it's the best in the world gets teh typical belt, but the HW champ is the only real pure belt holder. Teh other belts have caveats. Lets give it a rool dat each weight class gets their own belt. In boxing we can go further saying a different division can offer a belt at the same weight class.

The BMF belt has perameters that must be met, just like any other belt. They require a lengthy legacy being a bad-ass. It's more than just winning or losing, it's how you win or lose. It's true grit.

You have to be chosen to fight for teh BMF based on your history of true grit. Being chosen to fight for the belt is a right of passage that has to be earned.

Though Topuria is well on his way to being worthy, he had not yet earned the right to even fight for teh BMF belt when he fought Max.

I hope this clears it up. I'm not trying to be a smart-ass... this is exactly the logic that applies to Max still being teh BMF champ.

First of all, I get that it isn’t a “real” belt. But what I don’t understand is how it’s a belt at all if you don’t lose it when you lose? And you don’t gain the belt by beating the guy currently holding it? As far as I’m aware:

- At UFC 300, Max wins the BMF belt by brutally knocking out the then-titleholder Justin Gaethje. This is logical and makes sense.
- At UFC 308, Max is brutally knocked out by Ilia Topuria. Somehow Max retains the belt. This is where he logic breaks down.
- At UFC 318, Max will fight Dustin Poirier. Does the belt change hands based on the result of this fight?

Poirier is retiring after 318, so does this mean that Max can get knocked out for a 2nd time in a row and just keep the belt? It seems extremely dumb to have the supposed BMF belt not change hands when the current titleholder is knocked cold.

Did Alex Volkanovski lose his FW belt for getting KO'd by Islam?
No because it wasn't on the line. Toppy isn't eligible for the BMF belt. Can't fight for a BMF belt when you: a) buy one at the gift shop b) win a title and declare you will vacate rather than defend against the only legit #1 contender c) actively lobby for a title fight with someone with no top 10 wins (Paddy) d) All of the Above.

• Up to 3 fights in a single night
• No weight classes
• Includes characters like Frye, Tank, Goodridge and Kimo
• At least one fight ends in submission to headbutts

You know whats crazy, I am relieved he is actually going to fight Paddy and thought they would give him Justin instead to make it even easier. All Ilia has to do, is win like two more fights against people many don't even think are good and then me and dipstickjimmy (awesome name, lol) have no valid argument against Ilia being p4p #1 and a 2 division champ. (Which I guess he is now but he has only fought one person who was not really the champ and had already lost to the #1 contender.)

Imagine if Merab refused to fight Yan (again) or said he would never fight Umar.. Imagine if Sean said he would never fight Merab!??
