today i was jogging at the park and saw this huge dog on a leash held by it's owner and her bf. (some young girl in her 20s and her bf) it got away from her and charged at me. i stood there waiting for it to bite but it didn't. it just tried to jump on me. my question is, if this happens in the future, am i lawfully allowed to defend myself by any means such as kicking a charging dog or even pulling out a pocket knife to cut its throat or do i have to wait until it bites me? i don't want to wait until it bites because what if it jumps up at me and grabs a hold of my throat with its jaws or rearranges my face with it's fangs. anyone?

if its charging you and jumps/bites at you, you have every right to defend yourself

I've often wondered this myself. If it gets a hold of my arm what would I do? Choke it? Gouge the eyes? Punch and kick?

The owners can just go to pound, and get another pit, they have zero clue how to raise, anyway.

Has Sherdog taught you nothing? Touch it with teh jab

grab that son of a bitch around the neck and choke-slam it

slap on the RNC

In law school, we covered dog bite statutes briefly. It depends on the state, but the owner is usually liable if you get harmed by their dog. It depends on where the dog is, if the owner has control over it, and how harmed you are.

Also, you can defend yourself if you reasonably believed the dog was going to harm you and the only way to stop it is to harm it. I wouldn't advise killing the dog or using a deadly weapon like a knife to stave off the attack. You can't provoke it, or be trespassing, or something else that would show you as the aggressor, as you'll get tagged for that.

A dog/animal wrangler who works on movies once told me that if you're ever stuck someplace with a dog approaching you and you're not sure if it's wild or aggressive or what, be calm, ball your fist up, and put it out, if the dog smells it and leaves you alone cool; if he bites it, instead of trying to pull it away, punch as hard as you can down its throat. It will gag on your arm, freak out and try to get away from you.

Not sure if that's true or not since its never happened to me, but it's his trade, & it sounds cool, so if it ever happens I'm rolling with that shit.

ive heard that before..about shoving your arm down its throat

my question is...what if you run into a dog with no gag reflex?

If it's a game pit though,

Assume this stance & offer yourself to justbleed god.

I have small dogs so I think about this scenario from time to time. If it's rushing me and my dogs, I put out my arm for it to bite. It usually doesn't bite and just runs up to play. Then I grab it's collar and wait for the owwners to get the dog. If it bites, I grab it's collar to push its head to the ground. If it's going ham I plan to grab it by the collar and slam it against a pillar or the ground ala Rampage.

A little planning came in handy wwhen a pit rushed and bit my minpin. I don't think it was a game pit becasue I am still alive today.

EDIT: That dog dying story really got to me. Just for clarification, my goal is not to HURT the dog, but to PROTECT myself and my dogs. I want to end the threat ASAP and once there is no threat, no more damage to the dog. The goal is to subdue, not injure.

Id be careful and check with local laws in your jurisdiction before you go knifing somebody's dog, thats probably just excited and wants to play. You should get a can of bear spray and use that instead. Its non lethal, puts a barrier between you and a charging dog, and you can use it in case you get mugged or a bear happens to attack you.

Slide onto the hood of a car and get ready to upkick.

Had a friend tell me this story that he adopted a dog and unfortunately after only having the dog a few days the collar was not fit properly and as the dog wasnt fully trained yet it got away . It was a big dog but a friendly one . It didnt growl or bite but it liked to run up to other dogs . A couple were walking their dog and the man was a huge 6 foot something large guy and he kicked the dog so hard in stomach that the dog ended up dying a few days later . Just to note if you kick a charging dog it may die .
