Can he cut the weight? Not from where he is now. He was in the 320s for his last fight, but was in the 340s for the Wiuff fight. He needs to diet down quite a bit to make the cut minimal.
But yeah, I'd love to see him at a higher level. He would probably have been there already if he would commit to getting in better shape. The dude is 300+ doing 360 jump kicks and shit. Imagine what he does in great shape.
I personally always thought he should be in Bellator. I thought guys like Beast Boy, Tony Johnson Jr, Afrozilla, etc should have been in Bellator (Johnson fought there once where he beat current UFC fighter Derrick Lewis). They are guys I thought might be good enough for the UFC, but still needed to prove themselves in bigger promotions. If Beast Boy could prove he could consistently make the weight, and beat good fighters (which I think he can do), I'd like to see him in the UFC, or at least in Bellator.
I will never understand why I should rather watch 115lb men and women fight than the biggest, strongest men of them all. Its FIGHTING. I am tuning in to see who the toughest guys are, and you've eliminated all truly big men. If you put money into the purses I could watch someone like Hafthor Bjornsson fight..... but there's no weight class for the Titans of men... rather, I should get excited to watch Gary Coleman go at it with Emmanuel Lewis. Ok.
You shouldn't rather watch them. You should watch what you like. But there are plenty of us who do like watching the smaller weights just as much (more for some). So you don't have to prefer it or even like it at all. But it should be there for those of us who do like it.
They need to lift the HW restriction already, bring the freaks in...
The problem is then you would have guys like this coming in out of shape. That has always been a problem for SHW. A lot of the more popular and bigger name SHWs have also been able to make HW. When they do, they are in better shape and they perform better. I think Tim Sylvia is the most obvious example, but I would include guys like Chris Barnett in that as well. He can be in shape and make HW and look good. But when they aren't forced to be in shape, they often show up overweight. How big was Barnett for the Wiuff fight? There is no need for that. I like these guys and like to see them fighting at their best.
Now, if there are elite fighters who are in shape and have trouble getting to 265, and there are enough of them to warrant it, maybe raise the limit. SHW is there for guys not committed enough to get into fighting shape, or for those who simply can't. There just isn't enough of them at the elite level to warrant creating that division in the UFC right now.
Look to other sports for a second. Now, because MMA pay is low, the biggest fellas go to other sports. But take a good look - there are 300+lb ATHLETES all over the place.
That is why there is no reason for the UFC to have a SHW division or to remove the weight limit. If those athletes ever do start coming to MMA in large enough numbers, then maybe things will change. But for now, there just aren't enough of them who are at the elite level who can't make 265.
