PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island city has issued more than 12,000 speeding tickets in the first 33 days of a new school-zone speed camera program.

WPRI-TV reports 12,193 tickets were issued in Providence between Jan. 16 and Feb. 22 from five speed cameras.

The tickets cost $95 each, for a total charge for violators of $1.15 million. Records show the city has received $370,000 as of Feb. 22.

State lawmakers approved the cameras in 2016, and the Providence City Council voted to allow up to 15 cameras be installed in the city last May.

Tickets are issued for vehicles traveling more than 11 mph above the speed limit between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

This appears to be a good way for governments to increase revenue without adding new taxes.

Im all for it

I hate speeding motherfuckers... Going nowhere fast

Big brother at its finest; get the fuck out of here. Unless someone causes an accident of some sort, speeding should not be punished. They can go eat shit with their surveillance state mechanisms.

Next they'll start putting cameras in your house to make sure you're not doing anything illegal there too.

Why have speed limits then?

I see no problem. 11 over is pretty leinient

People should revolt by never speeding...not a single mph over the limit ever and watch the revenues dry right up to cities and towns. Bunch of parasites

For 11 mph over the limit, AND in a school zone on top of that?
I'm okay with this.

I would much rather cameras do this job than have cops hiding behind bushes with speed guns, or driving around trying to find speeders and people not wearing seat belts. That's a waste of time.
Leave that shit to the machines.

They got outlawed out here with the red light cameras. They still us speed trap vans in the town over.

People who are not aware enough to spot a speed camera, who are speeding are those that ought to be prosecuted.

It's a perfect system.

How do you feel about gun control? Opposed to any and all regulations I hope. I only ask because motor vehicle accidents cause far more deaths than gun violence. The numbers aren’t even close. Oddly enough I never see people protesting and marching for stricter regulations regarding motor vehicle licensing.

In Chicago, most people figure out where they are after a while and slow down while in range, and then just speed up once you pass them, myself included.

The mayor here was whining that the speed cameras after one year of installation were only generating about a quarter of revenue that they expected. So his solution was to install more. City wonders why it's broke, they broker deals for these get rich quick schemes with these camera companies, and then can't earn enough to fulfill their contract.

Providence is literally strapped to the teeth w/ speeding cameras & traffic light cameras. not to mention the amount of meter parking all over the city. the cameras have definitely had a panopticon type of effect on the way I drive at least. doesn’t seem to be the case for everyone though because RI drivers are still shit.

Speeding tickets are a racket, for sure. But if you're speeding through an active school zone, you get what you get.

How many kids are being run down in front of schools? It's not a thing. It's another way for the government to be a parasite on the citizens, under the guise of 'but think of the children'.

Reckless driving is one thing, but not all speeding is that, in fact most isn't. Go look at just about any highway during rush hour, and you will see just about everyone 'breaking the law' technically. It's kind of a joke.

Using technology to exploit this even further is pretty gross. Again, when an officer sees reckless driving, even if it's just speeding they deem excessive, that's fine. But acting like anyone who safely does 80 in a 65 on the highway, or 40 on a clear open road that's technically supposed to be 25 is somehow a danger to society, is kinda ridiculous in my view.

Gun control is also asinine.

People who belabor the "point" that other countries with "strict" gun control don't face as much gun violence have their heads up their arse. None of those countries have the same demographics, population size, or history of gun ubiquity in their societies; they also come from countries where the citizenry simply accepts the laws doled out to them by their politicians. The u.s. is an entirely different beast, and any attempts to suppress the rights of its citizens, particularly when it comes to those peoples' property, is tyrannical and draconian.
