My cousin lost her home in Malibu. Last I heard they were giving up on the rebuild and fighting with the insurance company.

I have a sister-in-law and nephew with homes in Pacific Palisades. The SIL's house burnt to the ground ($4M), as did the nephew's first home ($8M) that he was leasing out. His new home ($16M) is at the top of the hill, and it was spared. The nephew has been doing everything he can to help his mom and dad rebuild, but they are upset as they encounter resistance at every step. I've spent a lot of family parties and get-togethers at the $4M home that's gone... it had a lot of great memories. I've never been to the $8M or $16M homes as the nephew has invited none of us on this side of the family (which is enormous)... which is kind of sad.

....Remember the halcyon days of January 2025, when every politician representing the Los Angeles area, from city councilmen to the governor, promised to expedite permitting to help residents rebuild after the disastrous fires the Democrats created?

It was all bulls**t, and everybody knew it then, but of course, everybody in California’s Pravda pretended to take them seriously. After all, this is California, where the sun shines ever day and Gavin Newsom has a perpetual 10-year plan to end homelessness. Democrats are GOOD and Republicans are EVIL.

Well, as predicted by every sane person, the politicians have failed to follow through with their promised expediting of the permitting process. Of the 720 structures destroyed, only two have gotten permits to rebuild. One suspects that Newsom’s promise to rebuild the area better than ever actually means that he and the Democrats want to reshape it into their version of utopia.....

The project was a developer-led teardown and rebuild already in motion before the fire. The lot was purchased in early November 2024, a demolition permit was issued on January 7, 2025 (just before the fire's resurgence), and initial plans were submitted on November 8, 2024.


os Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is getting called out for prematurely taking a victory lap for touting the “first Palisades fire rebuild.”

Locals are calling the latest announcement from Bass misleading, and a glaring sign the city didn’t bother to check whether the house it was showcasing was even a fire-loss rebuild at all.

In fact, the house Bass used as a beacon of hope for families returning is a developer project that was already in motion before the blaze. The teardown and rebuild were planned well in advance, with nothing to do with the fire that later tore through the Palisades.

If only we had thought to take the forests. Damn. I guess that one got by us. Because global warming can’t be real despite nearly the entire scientific community’s consensus that it is, and that the greater severity and number of forest fires in California are a direct result.

Because if those scientists were right I would have one less political ax to grind. So that can’t be true.

Fuck Texas and Fuck California. Why not both? This hurts independent voters. Texas is far from the first state to gerrymander. We had rules set in place for districting to prevent this, now the Democrats hold all of the power in a state were non-Democrats were already underrepresented. Now even if you are on the LEFT you can't hold Democrats to account, because their is no challenge. This fucks over third party candidates as well, not just Republican.
