Opinion California on fire

A new fast-moving wildfire has erupted in Los Angeles County, prompting tens of thousands to evacuate a region already reeling from the most destructive fires in its history.

The Hughes fire ignited about 45 miles northwest of the city of Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, near Castaic Lake in a mountainous area that borders several residential areas and schools.

The out-of-control blaze has grown to more than 9,400 acres in several hours fuelled by winds and dry brush that is acting as fuel. No homes or businesses have been damaged, but about 31,000 residents have been forced to flee and Interstate 5 - the primary highway running along the US West Coast from Mexico to Canada - is closed.

The new fire is burning north of the two mammoth blazes - which are still burning - that destroyed multiple neighbourhoods in the Los Angeles area earlier this month.
Two other fires have ignited farther south near San Diego and Oceanside, officials said.

They are both smaller - 85 acres for the Lilac fire near Oceanside and 3.9 acres for the Bernardo fire - but were burning in populated areas. Fire crews appeared to have a handle on both of the blazes and evacuation orders had been mostly lifted and forward progress stopped.

People are lighting these fires and they will continue to light these fires. They have learned a valuable lesson in that they will do this when it gets windy for maximum destruction.

If by "people lighting these fires" you mean people creating power lines and being careless with ignition sources in extremely dry conditions, sure. Some are arson, but most aren't.

More than 30,000 people are under evacuation orders as new wildfires rapidly spread in the mountains of Los Angeles.

Three new fires have erupted each day since 21 January, scorching over 10,000 acres and forcing the deployment of more than 4,000 firefighters.

Despite the evacuation of homes and schools, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has reassured residents that authorities were 'gaining the upper hand'.

At least 28 people have died and more than 14,000 buildings and other structures destroyed since the devastating wildfires broke out more than two weeks ago.

What do we know about the active fires?

Sepulveda Fire - (0% contained) This latest blaze started on the 23rd of January, and has so far scorched 40 acres of land near the Pacific Palisades.

Hughes Fire - (14% contained) Described as a 'completely different beast' compared to earlier fires, Hughes has managed to burn more than 10,000 acres of land since the 22nd of January.

Clay Fire - (70% contained) This fire pales in comparison to others, only managing to burn through 39 acres of land since the 21st of January.

Eaton Fire - (95% contained) Burning in northern Los Angeles County, the Eaton Fire has charred over 14,000 acres since it broke out more than two weeks ago.

Palisades Fire - (72% contained) This was the first fire to break out on the 7th of January, which has burned more than 23,600 acres in Los Angeles, including areas in Pacific Palisades.

Amazing to see true leadership between this and North Carolina.

Gavin was/is obviously intimidated by being next to Trump and his voice just nonchalantly talking over newsom and controlling everything, Newsom being a little pawn to Trump lol

Trump being his usual POS self by threatening to withhold aid unless CA passes a voter ID law he wants <lol>

They should of course tell him to fuck himself.
Once we get Trump out of office we need to enact policies to ensure no more blue state money goes to subsidize red states. Not a goddamn penny.

This is beyond his "usual" POS antics. He's holding disaster aid hostage because he doesn't like the politics of that state. I dare anyone trying to defend this to find ONE other time when something like this was done by the President after a natural disaster. This is outright evil shit he's doing because he doesn't give a flying fuck about anyone who doesn't have something to offer him. It's like he took in the plea of the Bishop that spoke to him and decided he needed to do the opposite. Disgusting.

It wasn’t long ago that 2 separate hurricanes fucked Florida, where Trump lives and DeSantis is governor. I guess we should’ve demanded they repeal their shitty abortion law, or Don’t Say Gay, or stop banning books if they wanted aid to their hurt populations who had lost everything. Of course, we didn’t do that, Biden made sure Florida had all the emergency funding they needed. We do that for them, this is what we get back.

Yeah.. this is clearly the worst move Trump has made yet. It seems like Trump seeks to wield federal influence over states in a way that we've never seen... he should be careful, because California could call his bluff. The federal government needs the tax dollars from California a lot more than California needs federal Aid. California could start making demands of it's own.

Yeah, the threat of mesothelioma is just some woke, feel good thing.

I'm too checked out to even respond to this fucking stupidity.

They absolutely should make demands. CA’s GDP is #5 internationally, like compared to the other nations around the world. That’s insane. They’re one of 11 states that give more in taxes than they get in federal benefits. And where’s that excess going? Red states.

If Trump is serious about shutting down federal aid for disasters, it's going to take approximately one hurricane season for red states to start screaming bloody murder.

one of the largest fires in california history was connected to an arson, the Dixie fires (likely piggyback).

now I know that folks love blaming climate and power lines because PG&E has paid dearly, however it only takes one motivated arsonist to cause major havoc. "Copycat" crimes have always been a thing, always will, and even if the fire was caused by nature, arsons can and do come along to piggy back the situation, one of these odd scenarios.
