Opinion California on fire

I said happy new years bastard ... ah so they can't figure out how to get out of processing fees even though the other charities do ? Sounds about right for who runs it .. but you're right and I am saying wrong about the 3.95% blue sends it to whoever processes it.

but still 100% > 96.5%

"Observers online also quickly pointed out that ActBlue takes a portion of all donations as a processing fee. ActBlue claims to “charge a flat rate of 3.95% on each donation” to “cover the processing cost.” The Post has contacted ActBlue for comment.
The California Fire Foundation, which helps firefighters, their families and victims, allows users to donate directly without relying on a service like ActBlue to make those transactions.

Users who donate via Newsom’s fundraising appeal are also automatically signing up for text messages from his super PAC, if they provide their phone" numbers.
Warren says 100% will go to the two charities in her tweet. I assume that means the normal fee for donations is being waived here.

If you still feel uncomfortable with them scamming you or farming personal info, the readers added context directly below the tweet gives the links to both charities to donate directly.

It’s really not worth arguing over something that’s this easy to solve this much.

Happy New Year, bud.

Concession accepted.

Oh I didn't mean it to snowball lol, its def a good things they are still letting people know how to donate even if it's through ActBlue.

With the new stupid forum layout I scrolled past some of his words in posts and thought he was saying something different. Anyways the more help for those people the better. I am angered at all the mismanagement of things that probably made it all worse. Both sides often messed up and should be called out on their bullshit. People deserve better

I mean it’s still weird that anyone (DNC or RNC) would want to collect donations as a third party. They can simply use influence on social media to link followers directly to donate to these causes.

I’m given her the benefit of the doubt when she said “100%” will go the two charities, but find the extra layer of collecting it weird. She could have alternatively left the links to donate directly herself along with ActBlue’s link.

I can see how some would think anyone doing it this way (managing donations) might get bad optics that look self serving. She defiantly could have sent people straight to the source, these are well known accessible charities.

Yes just odd and Gavin doing the same thing . Just hoping the money don’t get mismanage to the charities or people on ground.

Is this AI?

A pilot flying a near 747-sized plane through smoke at what looks to be so close to treetops is extremely dangerous.... or is it just the camera perspective and the plane was actually at a safe-ish altitude?... or is it completely AI?

I don't think so. Those pilots have amazing skills.

Instead of running around blaming people from Mar-A-Lago look what Canada, Mexico and Ukraine are doing.

" Zelenskyy has said Ukraine is ready to assist those affected by the devastating wildfires in California, with 150 Ukrainian firefighters ready to go.

The offer by the Ukrainian president comes three days after Donald Trump Jr, son of US president-elect Donald Trump, responded to the Los Angeles wildfires by appearing to blame Ukraine on social media. “Oh look of course the LA fire department donated a bunch of their supplies to Ukraine,” Trump Jr said in a post on X on 8 January.

If deployed, Ukrainian firefighters would join those sent by Canada and Mexico, who have already converged on the Los Angeles area to help fire departments from around the state, even as Trump has threatened to levy tariffs against both countries.

On Sunday, Zelenskyy said in a post on X: “Today, I instructed Ukraine’s minister of internal affairs and our diplomats to prepare for the possible participation of our rescuers in combating the wildfires in California.

With this LA fire burning some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in California I have wondered how many wealthy California residences will leave California for other states such as Texas, and Florida.

California is a state known for the very high taxes the wealthy pay. It is a small percentage of California's population that pay most of the states taxes. IF some of the wealthy California residences leave the Bear state, due to the fires and dysfunction seen in government, I can imagine that hurting the states finances a decent amount.

https://www.latimes.com/california/...s-a-big-deal-in-the-state-capitol-ca-politics

When Gov. Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers settle on details of a new California budget in June to provide another year of government services for almost 40 million people, they will do so largely by tapping the fortunes of one of the most exclusive groups of taxpayers in the nation.

The group includes almost 100,000 taxpayers with incomes above $1 million — residents who represent only about one-half of 1% of all tax returns filed in the state but collectively pay about 40% of all California personal income taxes.

As tax day approaches, it’s this small subset of people who will likely again provide an outsize amount of government cash, a reminder of how dependent the state is on their fortunes.....

I haven't kept up on this thread, so this has probably already been posted. Just to say that over 40,000 acres (62½ square miles) has been burnt, and they're saying $150 billion of damages. Maybe the figures will still rise?

I couldn't immediately find solid figures, but it seems this will easily be the most expensive fire in US history, maybe more than double the cost of the second most expensive one.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but if they rebuild the burnt buildings, who's going to insure them against fire? Unless a King's Ransom is spent on preventing/quickly putting out future fires. If there is insurance I bet it will be expensive.

It wasn't a lack of water, in fact the system worked at maximum capacity for 15 hours straight. Name another district that can do that? There was water available, they just didn't have the pressure.

So actually what you think is logic is just made up BS for the rubes like you. Chow down on that misinformation homes.

Lol… wow, guess we have a water supply expert.

LA fires double tragedy after amputee dad tried to wait for ambulance for disabled son: Latest victims named

A 67 year-old amputee father was killed in the LA wildfires after staying behind to wait for an ambulance for his disabled son, who also died.

Anthony Mitchell was found by the side of his son Justin, who was in his early 20s and suffered cerebral palsy, in Altadena, California, after his family said he tried to protect them both.

'They didn't make it out,' Mitchell's daughter Hajime White told the Washington Post.

White said her father called her on Wednesday morning to tell her he and her half-brother Justin were evacuating due to the advancing fires.

'Then he said, ‘I’ve got to go — the fire's in the yard,' she recalled, saying it was the last time she heard his voice.

'He was not going to leave his son behind, no matter what,' she added. 'It's very hard. It's like a ton of bricks just fell on me.'

White said her father was a retired salesman and amputee who used a wheelchair, and said he was a loving family man dedicated to his four children, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

It comes as the death toll from the Los Angeles fires doubled to 10 overnight as officials warned the true devastation will take time to be uncovered.

Damn...this is just tragic. My heart goes out to all families with lost loved ones in this tragic event.

Anyone know if they do back burning type operations in LA? I know it's a big part of bushfire defence in Australia, I assume they do something similar.

Nope… its a massive failure by the Federal Government and insane environmentalists

So what’s the environmental impact of a fire completely wiping every living organism… plants and animals?

Was it worth the loss of lives and people’s homes?

How Red Tape Strangled California Forest Management Before LA Fires

"We can't let something as serious as this get lost in red tape. Mother Nature does not wait for court battles or paperwork to finish, and forests will continue to burn, threatening livelihoods in the meantime."

The reason California hasn't conducted more of these controlled burnings comes down to existing environmental laws in the U.S. that have posed bureaucratic obstacles to prescribed fires. It often takes years for proposals to go through reviews before any controlled burning can actually take place.

But in order for these prescribed fires to occur, they must go through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process, which can last anywhere from 3.6 years to 7.2 years between the time of initiation to when the burning can actually begin, according to a 2022 policy brief from the Property and Environment Research Center (PERC).

The Forest Service has been warning of a "forest health crisis of tremendous proportions" for more than two decades. In its own 2022 report, the agency said that "73 million acres of national forests are at risk from severe wildland fires that threaten human safety and ecosystem integrity."
