I said because of his race, not that mexican was a race. Although it has legally been a race in the past and is still thought by many as a race in american culture. Hence, a mestizo/indio from el salvadorian or guatemalen national will still be called a "mexican" because of their race,despite not being from Mexico.

Louis CK is mexican and he's white. Canelo is mexican and white.

It has always been a nationality, not a race. I don't think it has ever officially been considered a race, unless you can provide a source.

Exactly, they had to differentiate between European whites and Mexican whites. That is a nationalistic classification of an ethnicity
