Most likely, he was pale and hung out with white kids so the Mexicans made fun of him, called him white-washed. So he got the tattoo as a kid to compensate. He didn't want to be a brown-pride advocate but it stuck on his chest and the UFC ran with it so he had to double-down. The fact that he doesn't speak Spanish and didn't want to spend time in Mexico kinda lets you know where his heart's at.
