In my second match, after about 30 seconds, my hand hurt. I finished the match shortly after that w/ ippon by pin w/ kesa gatame. Once the match was over, the pain hit, and my hand swelled up like crazy. X-ray today revealed broken 3 and 4th ****carpal bones. I see the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow for treatment; wish me luck on not needing surgery!

damn that sucks. hope all is well though. btw are you with the usjf? if so, can't they cover some of the costs?

USJA. I dunno about covering the injury; thankfully I have good medical insurance.

BTW, this was the same tournament I was in recently. That sucks man. You are a beast for winning with a broken hand. Good luck tomorrow! I hope you just need a cast and not screws or plates. Hopefully we'll see you on the mats soon enough. Don't take any heckling from your wife (or actually, take her heckling like a MAN)... ;-)

Just checked, the insurance is secondary, only applies after other insurance.

Bad luck.

How did it happen, do you think? Tangled in a gi, or did you post on a throw.

Good luck. Take your time coming back. I broke my hand in hockey and I came back too early.

Sorry to hear that, hope it heals well ... and careful with grip fighting for a while even after the doctor has pronounced it good to go.

got told a story about one of the headcoaches at a recent judo camp I went to, he supposedly won a Nordic championship with a broken hand the whole comp. couldn't use his hand at all so he kept his hand above his head

Betcha tried the Judo Chop, didnt ya.....

I just watched the match on video, and still can't figure out how I did it. Didn't post on a throw. The only time I based on that hand at all, I was in the guy's guard, and on my knees--looked like nothing. Might have been caught in his gi at another point, I dunno. Strange.

That sucks, I broke my index finger a few years back in wrestling and it still hurts.

Btw is this Jeff from shj?

nice display of courage finishing the match. good luck on recovery

Yeah, I'm a USJA life member, and it's after what your other insurance won't pay, but I think it's limited coverage. I'm actually looking into mine, to see if they will cover deductibles and such that my primary won't.

So, I broke ****carpals 3,4,5. Apparently I am lucky, as even though the breaks are clean, my fingers are still properly aligned, and for now I have dodged the surgery bullet. I have a splint immobilizing my hand, and I have to be mega careful for the next weeks, as any random stress on my hand in that time could put me on the road to surgery.

No driving, no training. Bleah.
