What's the best bro science you've heard?
I had a dude tell me testosterone is stored in the legs and that's why you get bigger when you squat heavy.

Along those same lines, I've heard bro science that says doing squats releases testosterone to the rest of the body.

This could be a fun thread, I'll have to give this some thought.

Mostly brosience I've heard of are from diet:
-If I eat clean all camp, but for some reason have 1 poptart, it'll make me gas in my fight, etc
-Vega/planet based whey protein is better than regular whey, for same reasons as point #1
-eating less than 5 meals per day will wreck my metabolism
-meal timing 20min post-workout ASAP, or my gains will disappear faster than gas in a Ferrari

There's a couple I would hear from guys at the MMA/combat sport gyms, if its classified as bro-sci.:
-weights will cause you to:
-gas, slow down, doesn't improve explosive strength, makes your metabolism weaker
-Counting calories doesn't work, then they proceed to tell me a diet, which ends up being Paleo
-running 8k and wiping yourself out with endless circuits, creates more functional strength development compared to traditional weight training protocols

Article comes with a variety of statements with no backing, one gem in particular to bring the lolz:
"Parallel squats require markedly greater activation, muscular tension, concentration, mental fortitude, intensity, and overall strength"

My favorite piece of bro-science is that the type of food you eat rather than creating a caloric deficit is what leads to weight loss. Nope. Do you even physics?

Also, the whole concept of 'functional strength' is just bro science in lycra on a bosu ball.

Usually when I bring it up, it ends up with "Counting calories doesn't work, X fighter/gym bro told me so."
It borders on the line of religious dogma.

It's not in the legs. The legs are closer to your balls than say your arms or chest and that is why squats are good for testosterone

That's why I only do glute bridges. They thrust my balls up in the air so the testosterone runs downhilll to the rest of my body.

I thought the fact that you're lifting heavy is what causes the release of testosterone.

rich piana assures me that the smaller your balls are, the more testosterone you have.

I had a BJJ blue belt friend who thought he would be able to out muscle me while grappling and keep me trapped in his guard because the "functional" leg strength playing guard at BJJ training gave him over my silly "weightlifting strength".

He claimed his legs were "too strong" (the guys a skinny non lifting 6'2 190 pounds, twenty pounds on me but my dead was at 410 so I obviously knew who was stronger there). I hopped down into his guard and was unsurprisingly out and on my feet in seconds (little more difficult keeping someone in guard no gi lol).

Functional strength. Just no.

Some weird body builder from Australia or Austria or some fucked up place like that said that getting the pump is better than cumming...

For sure that's bro science.

Cardio will kill your gainz man.

I love this one. I mean obviously you won't get an insane total while training for a marathon, but I've known some very serious mountaineers and adventurers that have unbelievable endurance who are very very serious about their strength training. Hell in not setting any world records but even I can out lift most gym brahs and still get out and hammer a solid 10k at a moments notice.

It's harder
Depends.

If someone has a screwed up metabolism due to under eating for a prolonged period long time, then yes; If its someone with a regular or high metabolic rate, a decent lifting routine should be enough to maintain muscle, while dieting takes care of the weight/fat loss.

To actually make a huge difference in caloric intake on the TDEE, the cardio and activity level has to be through the roof.
Using myself as an example, my TDEE is 2800 calories. When I'm in camp, there's alot more cardio involved (4-5 days MT/BJJ, 2 lifting). I haven't competed since November, and been on a 6 day PPL with 2 days at the MMA gym. My TDEE is still the same, there's been no major changes metabolism-wise. I'm on a bulk, which is the only difference and the numbers add up.

So I agree with guys in the bodybuilding/lifting community when they say that cardio is helpful, but its not required for weight/fat loss.
