Brian Ortega is Legit? Too Nice?

He's only 'legit' until his next fight. I think that word is not a good way to describe someone in MMA. Each fighter has their own unique skill-set and some of it matches up well with a fighter and the reverse, but I think come fight night it boils down to who's the better fighter on the night.

I don't think Ortega is any more legit now than he was before the Edgar fight. He cracked Edgar with a nice left hook or straight that wobbled him and what impressed me about Ortega was his composure where he didn't rush in once he seen Edgar was wobbled.

In contrast, earlier in the night in the O'Malley and Soukhamthath fight, the latter got dogs abuse for taking it to the ground and his fight IQ was questioned. I agree fully with folk saying he should have let O'Malley get back up, but there must be a million things rushing through certain fighter's heads when they're in there and I'm sure Soukhamthath will be kicking himself for taking him down. I think that's a fight both of them can learn from. O'Malley looked good, but he seemed to rush things a little bit, while Soukhamthath stood in the pocket and then was snake charmed into putting pressure on O'Malley without throwing much and got caught.

I think a fighter keeping their composure is one of those things that's over looked and Ortega seems to have that - not that he can't lose it in a fight in the future. Even when he fought Guida, I thought he was 2 rounds down and then he landed that jumping knee that KO'd Guida.

Now he'll have a lot more distractions outside of fighting that might be a pain in the balls to deal with and he may need to start think-thanking how to deal with all that.

The UFC already has its quota of shit-talking morons, Ortega's a refreshing change.

No. You can be nice and considerate and still be fierce in the cage. Did you see those two shots he hit Frankie with after the knock out. That was harsh.

TBH, I would have liked to see him compete in BJJ. I don't think he's anywhere near Maia level but probably Nick Diaz level which is quite high.

I can’t see how anybody can’t like Ortega as this point.

Dude can bang, dude can roll, dude is humble and dude doesn’t talk shit.

What’s not to like?

Not trying to be a dick, but are we talking about a legit fighter (which he obviously is), or legit as in: not too nice? And in case of the last one, how is being nice not legit?

<{vega}>

Yea, didn't really make sense. I think he combined two questions into one.

His 'nice guy thing' is great if it is real (i believe it is) but will become corny and unpalatable if it becomes the main focus of who he is. It looks like Dana and Co. is definitely trying to push this 'MMA Jesus' narrative as much as possible - I hope Ortega does not fall for the temptation to turn his personality into 'a brand' and risk becoming a weird marketing parody of himself.
Dana does seem to love caricatures so it's a legit concern that this will be attempted.
Think Ortega is for real, though, and strong enough to decide for himself. Life is long and Dana's loyalties only lasts so long.
Great op, btw.

That's a good point man, hopefully they stop the narrative after a while. To be honest I can't imagine Ortega wanting to keep banging on about it, unless the UFC keeps pushing it. And as someone else pointed out, Ortega has that old 'fire' in him from his rough days, if he faces the right contender that gets him really fired up with a rivalry we may see a different side to Ortega.

Cheating guys who follow jesus just crack me up. indicated mental illness imo.

Then the vast majority of the world have a mental illness my friend...cause the vast majority of people on this planet believe in god.

It's not that I dislike him, but the failed drug test is a bit of a let down - as it is with any fighter. I know he addressed it and held his hands up for doing it and he said it was for cutting weight - which I think some fighters in the past have genuinely used a substance for that reason alone - but cheating is cheating, and especially in a sport like MMA where even making a weight cut easier for yourself by taking something illegal and the other fighter is going through hell just isn't on.

It happened and it's in the past and he's tested clean since but for me it leaves a bit of a stain on his record. Now he has that high profile win, it'll come up more, so I won't have any sympathy for him there nor will I be wishing he gets his face caved in.

I find it amazing (if posters on here are not trolling) think USADA is ruining the sport. It will take a death by someone being beaten by a juice head for folk to stop querying if USADA is bad for the sport. Look at Bisping - you even have fighters mocking him over his eye caused by someone clearly taking something they shouldn't have.

Fair point and something I completely forgot about tbh.

I think he is Legit. I don't think he is too nice. What do you think? I first saw Ortega against Diego Brandao and man was I shocked. His Jiu Jitsu was so smooth it was unreal. I started researching the guy and I have followed him since then and I really do think he is legit. The only issue was his stand up game but he only gets better with his stand up each fight. Lets not forget this guy has been fighting in everyday life since he was a young kid and I remember somebody once say (who I can't remember) but was somebody high up in MMA that Ortega is just as tough if not more tough than the Diaz Brothers. It sounds far fetched now but give it time and I think people with realise that.

His Jiu Jitsu is so on another level its crazy. You can never let this guy get a hold of you or it could be game over but now that his stand up is better and can hurt you he is even more dangerous.

I think his Nice guy thing is just the result of him trying to be a better person because I am sure he would also admit that he was a bit of a dick in his early life and I feel he had enough shit times that he wants to become a better person. Remember Ortega was a gang-banger and for a period of time almost every couple of weeks his homies were being killed or sent to prison so I think he realised that the life he was leading was going to come to a bad end.

Also Rener Gracie is a massive reason and influence on Ortega and why a lot of people are surprised when they find out how rough his past was and how good a person he is today.

Just throwing my thoughts out there, thanks for taking the time to read.

the whole time I was reading this I thought you were saying he is not legit because he's too nice. I was like "wtf!?" then I re-read the title. Cool story, right bro?
