It was in the news because it WAS A BIG DEAL. First black woman to potentially get an Oscar. Monsters Ball had Oscar buzz the moment it came out, i remember when it came out.
There are a range of potential reasons why The Others didn't get nominated, for you to say it was just to give Halle a win is absolutely baseless and retarded.

When was the Academy Awards EVER a totally accurate judge of the best films and actors? Johnny Depp was nominated for best actor for Pirates of the Caribbean the following fucking year. Forrest Gump beat Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction . Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan

As far as I'm aware, they don't release a list of which member voted for which film, so it's essentially a case of 'yeah everyone voted for Film A and not film B, trust us, honestly.

If you can look at all that, as well as the sweeping changes made by the academy this year to get more black films nominated, then you can't possibly think that occum's razor is on the side of your argument and not mine.

I saw the movie, and thought her performance was great. I saw "the others" as well, and i frankly don't even barely remember Kidman's performance .
I DO remembered Berry's though, and i enjoyed her work.

MY contention is that critics have a big pull in what movies are nominated. I specifically remember Monster's Ball being talked about when it first hit Sundance.

"Good performance, worthy of a nomination" was your sign off. Tells you everything you need to know. You didn't end with "phenomenal performance, best acting in any film that year." You clearly don't think it was the best performance of the year.

Kidmans performance in the others was better than her performance in Moulin Rouge. Saying that good performances get overlooked all the time is not good enough to explain why she still got nominated, just in a shit role. It was clearly a way to appease fans who didn't think Berry was as good as Kidman that year.

If you don't think the Oscars are a social political tool, with influence coming in and outwards, you'd be naive. Research the history of the damn thing with an open mind.

Brandon Schuab's show is pretty racist though. The handful of times I listened to it whenever their comedian friends come on and they can't think of anything, they default to picking on Asian people and making stereotypical jokes even though their producer is a Korean dude. Pretty sad person.
