Everyone's going crazy over Brandin Cooks since the Pats got him, and that's gone into overdrive since Edelman got hurt. But there's a lot of issues with him that nobody seems to be talking about.
1. First off, stop saying he's going to be like Randy Moss. Moss was tall, could jump high, and had great hands. Cooks has none of those things. Cooks will not be catching jump balls.
2. Cooks is not a red zone threat. In the red zone Brady looks for Gronk, and if he can't find Gronk, then he goes with who has the reliable hands... Edelman, Amendola, etc.
3. "But he's playing in a high powered offense with Brady now!" Newsflash, he played in a high powered offense with a great QB on the Saints too. So this doesn't automatically mean he's going to be a lot better.
4. "But Belichick's a genius and he'll figure out how to use Cooks' talent!" Sean Payton is also an offensive genius, so it's possible that Payton already figured out how to use Cooks' talent, and was using it to it's max already.
5. "But Edelman's hurt!!! Cooks will get all of his targets!!!" Not necessarily. First of all, Cooks, who was supposedly the star WR on the Saints, was actually outperformed by rookie Michael Thomas, and lost a lot of targets to the undrafted Willie Snead. Brees would rather throw to those guys than give Cooks more targets. And there was no Gronk to compete with on the Saints.
I basically see Cooks' strengths as speed and precise route running. In that vein he's like Desean Jackson. His speed will stretch the field and open things up for OTHER receivers, but it doesn't necessarily make HIM catch more balls. Now, that's not a bad thing. Desean Jackson is a good receiver. But people need to stop acting like Cooks is going to be this year's AJ Green or Julio Jones.
My prediction is that Cooks has a season a little better than he had last year, and mostly because it's his 3rd year in the NFL and part of his natural progression.
Come at me bros.
