I know, i know, you don't have to remind me how many times this has been done.

I was just wondering myself, do boxers stand any chance against muay thai fighters? Is the Muay Thai Clinch really better than boxing's clinch?

I won't pretend to be a MT expert (or a boxing expert for that matter), but this is the general impression I get:

boxers tend to have a better understanding of mobility/footwork and head movement. To be a great Nak Muay you definitely need to have at least good boxing. That said, Nak Muay's (and I mean real Nak Muay's not farangs or UFC fighters) tend to do usually at least decently in boxing. Obviously kicks elbows and knees add an entirely different element to MT that boxers don't really understand, since they aren't taught it.

The MT clinch is definitely dominant over boxing's clinch though IMO. The Thai clinch is a whole different world, the strength and balance those guys demonstrate is crazy. I mean we're talking little 115 pounders muscling around guys 40-50 pounds bigger than them, and that's not taking into account sweeps and the like. They may not have the same understanding of clinch boxing, but they make up for that with everything else.

I'd say they're essentially evenly matched styles, you just have to apply them right.

The answer to your first question is "It depends". If you take two equal fighters, the one will dominate the other under their own familiar ruleset. A good boxer is going to light up a equally skilled nak muay under boxing rules and vice versa.

Now, if your second question is "If all techniques taught in Muay Thai are allowed in the clinch and a boxer and nak muay fight a clinch battle, is the Muay Thai clinch better than the boxing clinch?", then the answer is "Yes". The nak muay has many more weapons at his disposal that the boxer is unfamiliar with because he doesn't have to train for them.

Its not boxers vs Muay Thai ,.....its individual vs individual . The art itself doesn't fight the person does and whoever is better at their craft USUALLY wins . Muay Thai offers a broader range of options and is a much more effective clinching style . A good boxer can knock out a Muay Thai practioner with hands easier while low kicking and inside knees will be to the advantage of the Muay Thai practioner .Personally if a boxer takes time to develope the concept of check kicking and PROPER Knee blocking when the opposition has his head getting pushed down to avoid knee strikes ,the boxer has a very good chance because they are a little more polished in punching and can utilise more basic simpler direct strikes, understanding Muay Thai foot work is crucial to adapt to it as certain stances and foot switching can tell you what a Muay Thai practioner may be setting up for.

A great Muay Thai practioner is very difficult ,they will generally be more conditioned physically to the average fighter because they kill alot of nerves making them less susceptible to pain .....one shot to tthe temple or chin is all its takes so in the end its up to the fighter to win not the style .

Do you guys ever get tired of talking about what retired boxers accomplished in other sports? I really don't see the relevance.

If boxing > muay thai under muay thai rules, then everybody in muay thai would be boxing. There would be no muay thai

Well, people think one art is dominant and better than the others and that's not true. Any style can beat any style when applied right.

You can beat someone in a fight with just Boxing. I've seen video of a Boxer winning a Kickboxing match with a Muay Thai fighter but I've seen many more videos of Kickboxers who train Muay Thai beating Boxers.

Let's use simple logic here. Would you rather just learn how to punch or to punch, kick, knee and elbow?

The Thai clinch is obviously better than the Boxing clinch although dirty Boxing is effective.

I would recommend learning both Boxing and Muay Thai with a heavier emphasis on Muay Thai because of the wider variety of striking techniques.

Ray Merced and James Toney don't prove that point.

Not saying they do or don't, just an example. There is no concrete evidence one way or the other to be honest. All forms of fighting are effective.

Boxing is more intricate. MT is less intricate because of boxing footwork, and head movement. MT is rigid. They expect you to fight a certain way. Overall, boxing is better. If a boxer fights a thai boxer, the boxer can win by picking the Thai boxer apart.

From my observations, I likened Muay thai to Mexican/African style boxing and Dutch Kickboxing. You usually see a high guard with fighters standing their ground. I don't think boxers with this particular style can take out the MT fighter because they'll fall into the clinch game where the Thai is superior.

An out boxer or a more nimble slick boxer stand a better chance against MT fighters. We've seen that in MMA where MT styled fighters get picked apart by out boxer fighters for the decision victory.

Ill give you the answer you want.
Boxing.
Muay Thai is shit. Go watch a fight, its complete horseshit. Awful movement, they just stand there and kick calfs for like 3 rounds with an elbow here and there. By the way, adding elbows, knees, and kicks means nothing. You can't throw a combo of knees, elbows, and kicks, like you can with your fist.
People on here want to be like "I love all combat sports".
Fuck that Muay Thai sucks.
