Boxing gym HELP!!! Seattle,WA

I was thinking about asking one of the trainers at the proper gyms (eg;tacoma boxing club) for some guidance ,maybe one of them will be kind enough to direct me to someone ,they should surely know majority of their competition out there

there was also a police boxing club id heard about in burien, ill look for a link.

that's white center PAL. more of a youth boxing place though. they actually have a boxing show coming up at evergreen high school on july 27th.

Thats hella far from me , It makes me wonder since there is such lack of Boxing out here in Seattle could it be worth it trying to broaden the scene in the future, opening a gym, getting promoters, trying to get fighters out there??:icon_idea

I dont know, bob jarvis stated his reason for closing a gym in the northend seattle and opening up the one at hillman was that the white fighters he taught at the time dissapeared around fight time. He wanted a gritty neighborhood (which seattle really has little of in comparison to major cities) so he basically said he wanted black fighters. this was an old newspaper interview i saved but lost many years ago. the demographic for boxing is wrong in suburbia, its good for mma (guys who dont really box or get hit) but terrible for boxing. greg haugen trains fighters somewhat these days, i dont know at which gym though, i dont know how much energy he puts into it but i will say this, hes got a fine boxing mind. seattle used to have a boxing scene, i knew of all the major players but compared to don king or bob arum it was nothing.

i believe greg haugen trains guys at vision quest fitness in auburn. haven't seen any amateurs though.

the problem with owning a gym is that people who can pay can't fight and people who can fight can't pay, as told to me by another coach. :-)

i find this to be true.

with that said there are plenty of boxing gyms in seattle. you're just out in the middle of nowhere, no offense.

in seattle: seamar, cappy's, seattle boxing studio, bumble bee, credit boxing, white center PAL, robert shannon... azteca boxing and tenochtitlan in renton...

I guess it is kind of true tho, you want to get the hardknocks from the street who need to be in a gym instead of the occasional workout guy who comes once a month, its such a disappointment coming to USA ,which is made out to be a dreamers heaven when living in a 3rd world country , yet its all a lie :D but yeah i guess for now i'll have to settle in any gym ,maybe in time make a move

well, all i can say is that beggars can't be choosers. if that is your only option, then it is your only option. go for it.

if he wants pure boxing he wont get it at any of the mma places, time and money should be important to the people running things but they are not. Im trying to save the poor guy time and money, if there is no way to do that, dont whore yourself out, do what i did, nothing. Id rather fight in the street than deal with all that shit.

thats true, very true, but as a fighter i will never blame myself for how other people run shit. like i tell people i dont need their stamp to call myself a fighter. If i were to die in a fight id die happy.

Sucks that i never really got a choice, my parents got told that up north is the best place to live, quite, little crime, that's pretty much what they wanted after living in South Africa for the past 12 years

how that lie goes on after hundreds of years of dissilusioned immigrants astounds me, some of my friends tell me its nothing like theyd heard too. I told you id help you if i can, you gotta be open to help though, ive always attracted guys who wouldnt listen to a thing i said and usually were just lonely and needed a daddy, which I aint.

if i were you, i would go to summers boxing. at least, you don't have to deal with seattle traffic by going north.

he just sent a kid up to nationals, and has two recent, local golden gloves champions.

ok, makes sense, i havent heard of any fighters coming from him either. that fine boxing mind that he has doesnt mean anything if he a. doesnt teach the stuff b. no one will listen, one or both of those things could be happening, i wouldnt know.

hey, didnt know you were here in seattle. funny thing about the one you mention in the alley, it did close, but, i sparred the guy a few years before i visited this gym, i went in and asked to watch, he told me no, but i recognized him and went back and reminded him who i was and he was friendlier. also, yes, there is a boxing gym on broadway run by a woman, i wouldnt recommend that, it looks to be more a boxercise place. Ive known the woman for years, she did fight pro, i dont know much about how she runs things so I cant really recommend her, (im kind of a chauvinist too though). I swear to god, youll spend 95 percent of your time chasing bullshit if youre not careful, ive done it, lots of sincere fighters have done it, it gets real frustrating real fast.

YUp...been in the Seattle Area for about 13 years now...

I went to the one in the alley on Pike several times to train...I coudn't juggle college, full time job and boxing so I had to drop it...

A young boy I use to baby sit went to the one on Broadway and Pike...he really liked it...he lost a lot of his baby fat...

I told him straight up, stick with boxing and "you'll be in the best shape of your life.." and I also said it's one of the best self defense tools out there...

I just wish there were more boxing gyms in my hood when I was a kid.

is that brett summers gym? i recall he was a top ammie who had little success as a pro, he went to kronk in the eighties and had some fights on espn. sure thats a good place to go though.

yeah that's brett summer's gym; its a good one. i can't speak of the facilities, since i've never been, but his team makes for good boxers.

i'm not sure about the MMA stuff, i would guess so. but last i heard, that's where he trains.

Back in his heyday, Haugen was the shit...

wait, we are talking about the same Haugen who got his ass kicked by JCC sr, right?

yeah, same one. i think his rep as a trainer took a hit when his son decided to do a pro fight, without any amateur experience... and got, um, beat.
