Now I’m about 85kg but I haven’t sparred in years, or fought in even longer. Also currently nursing a ruptured Achilles’ tendon so couldn’t punch my way out of a wet paper bag

I fought in the amateurs as a kid then as an adult as light as 60kg at lightweight up to 75kg at middleweight. Then did a bit of Muay Thai and grappling but with the injury everything is on hold.

Most of the guys I saw regularly dropping folk at sparring would probably have been around the welterweight (69kg) weight class at least, and tbf it would normally be when the sparring partner was outmatched.

I get that, just from my experience it wasn’t even a particularly rare thing. We would always spar in 16oz gloves and knockdowns at least were a regular occurrence.

Yeah his power and also his chin was EPIC, when he was the IBA HW champ and like 60-1 or something and in his prime he was a killer.. for some reason people think he was like a freakshow because he was 400 Ibs and obese and went on WWE and other shows, but in real he was an elite trained boxer.. and never ever gassed in well over 100 pro boxing fights, not even once. Was an expert in pacing himself too which is also a huge skill

Boxing was fun back then, used to watch a lot more than now. I was sad when Andre Ward retired.. he was one of my favorites and I felt like he was too young to retire.. could do a lot more.

I think some of it has to do with the ethos of the gym you train at more than the boxer. For instance, I spent the latter part of my time competing at a gym in Glasgow that was near a local prison. We would have a conveyer belt of ex-prisoners come to the gym on a regular basis.

They were no doubt ‘tough’ in a street cred kinda way, and some probably dangerous as fuck, but they would wrongly assume that they could hang with a good amateur because of that. They would normally posture a bit, spam a few sloppy punches, and then get countered hard.

One of the interesting aspects of mixed martial arts is negative. Few fighters master every facet of the game, and so even in high level matches we see specialists poorly performing techniques outside of their specialty. I think this makes MMA unlike other sports. You can see an MMA champ throw a bad jab, or go for a clumsy takedown, whereas it's rare to see a Super Bowl tier NFL team consistently blow coverages or a top NBA team consistently struggle at the free throw line.

With all that said, this really might be the worst punch I've ever seen in actual competition. I jsut can't stop watching the gif, because it's hard to believe. There's got to be something from the early years or from Cindy Dandois' highlight reel that is worse, but I can't readily think of it.
