The aircraft is designed for spy recon assignments, similar to the Blackbird SR-71 – the fastest manned airplane ever made.

A hypersonic aircraft is one that can travel at Mach 5 speeds or faster. Mach 5 is five times the speed of sound, as the terms “mach” and “mach number” refer to the ratio of the speed of an object to the speed of sound in fluid. Object traveling at speeds greater than Mach 1 are said to be traveling at supersonic speeds.

The U.S. has tested a Mach 20 unmanned aircraft in the past. That 2011 hypersonic flight test ultimately crashed into the Pacific Ocean after a few minutes.

Boeing’s head of hypersonic research told Aviation Week there is a two-step development process for the aircraft that has yet to be approved for development.

First, there would be flight tests with an F-16, single-engine design, followed by a twin-engine, full-scale operational vehicle that would be roughly 107 feet long, similar to the SR-71.

The new aircraft would compete with Lockheed Martin’s S-72, which may be in its final stage of development and would be ready for testing in the 2020s.

The challenge that the SR-71 replacement faces would be its ability to take off, accelerate and reach Mach 5, and then slow down by itself.

Boeing is considering using a conventional turbojet to hit Mach 3, but then use another configuration to achieve Mach 5 and beyond.

This may or may not be the XS-1 shuttle, but i dont know

I don't know anything about this but what are they going to be able to do with this that can't be done with satellites? I guess we don't have that much military satellite coverage. I've seen a SR-71 on display, and they are interesting.

satellites will be getting swatted like flies in the next big shooting war so having an alternate capability could come in handy

I’d love to see even the declassified version of the engine tech. There has to be a bigger breakthrough than just more power, less weight, more aerodynamic to achieve Mach 5-6

Their stock has been on fire. Great company. They said they will be investing a lot in R and D with tax cuts.

Boeing CEO also said they will beat Musk to Mars.

Defense and aerospace stocks are gonna be hot this year. If you got some spare money laying around, it's not a bad idea to make a hefty profit.

Care to fill the layman in? I know next to nothing but what's the physical limitation that stopped them in the past?

When I was really young my grandfather used to always say the next world war would be fought in space. I was a kid so my idea was space-Marines, or some kind of space-corps. Now I realize he was just talking about satellites.

Meh. My way is cooler.
