I found this (rather old) video on this blog post: http://muaythaipros.com/fight-of-the-week-size-vs-more-size-bodybuilder/

[YT]4AyaspKv_Gc[/YT]

The post was all about the difference between functional and non-functional muscle. However, the difference in this case seems more due to experience, don't you think? I mean the bodybuilder guy looked like a complete beginner. I almost started yelling at the computer: Cmon, do something! :-)

All these people who say "muscles are muscles" make me laugh. As if being 6'1" 450 lbs was beneficial for combat sports or even just healthy. I've always thought mobility, speed and cardio were crucial in a stand-up fight but apparently looking like The Incredible Hulk is just as important.

You're missing the point. The guys saying "muscles are muscles" aren't saying strength is everything and mobility, speed, and cardio are unimportant. They're saying functional strength is bullshit and they're right, it was made up to sell innovation in athletic training and the results of said training were unimpressive.

The way to build functional strength is to build strength because the reality of "functional strength" is that it is just strength with an unnecessary word arbitrarily added to it. For example, you used to hear people say all the time that a high level wrestler feels stronger than the amount of weight he can lift because he has some mysterious form of strength that weight lifters don't know about when the very simple and far more realistic truth is that he feels stronger because of his skill and instinctive understanding of leverage.

It's not that his muscles don't work or anything. He simply has no defence, no timing etc.

this is basic physics.

force = mass x acceleration

bodybuilder has mass but little acceleration so not too much power.
mike tyson had a lot of mass and high acceleration hence his power.

he shouldnt even be in the ring

poor guy lol

also...

What a tool.

Simply not true. There are two primary factors in "strenght", taking leverage and technique aside. Mass and nervous wiring. You can cause hypertrophy and add mass, but still be held back by your inhibitiors, kinetics chains, motor patterns and nerve endings. Just like you can improve those factors without gaining much mass(which is basicly what most newbie gains are).

Co-ordination between muscles are also equally or more important than pure strenght in any physical activity that takes skill. Which is basicly any sport. That is why someone who is good at oly lifting will be able to clean and jerk more than a powerlifter, but strict press less. Powerlifting is part skill as well don't get me wrong(or at least correct motorn patterns are very important), but they are different. The oly lifters applied or "functional"(I dislike the word too) strenght in this case will be greater given the task, while his absolute strenght will be lower. It's not just about leverage, it's about co-ordination, explosiveness and nervous wiring.

Point is strenght is not just strenght and that there are different kinds of strenght. Also mass is only part of strenght. Everything is in relations to the task. Luckely a lot of it intertwines so you can definitely gain something from a proper S&C program.

I'd say that the BB's mass and strenght helped him absolutely none in this fight.

I think he is allowed to fight in a ring only to attract people who dont know shit about muay thai but like to watch big muscular guys fight.
so slow and timid, he didn't even check one kic, threw no combination at all.

Doubtful, he didn't have the mental toughness of a sniper or the work ethic in the gym.

So a guy with a competition bodybuilding physique had no mental toughness or work ethic. Come on brah.. This is too dumb.

eyes always came alive when a muscle head made his way into the gym, especially those who ran their mouth.

Too much training makes you go catabolic LOL :icon_lol:

Obviously bodybuilding is easier than fight training

Red herring. That muscle mass functions just fine, the dude just doesn't know how to fight.

Assuming both those dudes are your friends, which one are you calling when you need help packing and moving your apartment? It's not as if the weight lifter is only capable of doing these limited motion lifts.

i expected the buff dude to be a complete noob but it appears as though hes at least trained MT. i mean, he at least attempted cross checking a kick early on and threw a leg kick so he knows something at least.

I guess it's a good video to show people that being jacked and huge doesn't equal fighting ability. But that's something most people who train know already.

Just wait until Sage Northcutt becomes WW champ within a year you guys.

Most likely he was hoping to land a one hitter quitter.

I was at Sinbi when this bodybuilder came. He was an ok guy I guess. Said he wanted to slim down a bit. But then he started telling people he was a former Marine Sniper. I called bullshit on that. I knew plenty of snipers when I was in the military and none were big guys by any means. Fit yes, but not huge muscles.

Yeah I can see your point I even know tactic divers that are muscle with fat like me but no bodybuilder kind of body, is not a composition useful for many things, if you go to war I can imagine you need some fat percent...

He could've gotten into bodybuilding after his discharge?

Reminds me of something I heard once.

Q: How do you spot a fake marine?

A: When he opens his goddamned mouth.

Perhaps he was in the marines. It doesn't necessarily mean he was very good or that he stayed there very long. In the same way he can now brag how he fought in a Thai boxing stadium. It's true, he did! :icon_lol:

non-functional muscle is such a painfully stupid term. The guy just didn't know how to fight. That's the big difference.

Dat belly doe
