Bluray collections, yay or nay?

I got a 55 inch 4K curve and the 4K blu ray player, already disappointed in the selection of movies and it's been a year since I've bought this rig. Last night I bought and watched Bladerunner 2049 and was actually pretty disappointed in the video quality, it's really not this super "4 times better than HD/Blu Ray!" and it's honestly just not worth the high price tag(paid $30 plus tax for Bladerunner 2049), regular DVD or Blu Ray is just fine for me and that's what I'll be sticking with from now on, hell I'll still watch VHS tapes they look perfectly acceptable for old movies still.

One obvious disadvantage of 4K is that the majority of older films aren't going to be able to exploit it fully unless they were shot on a format larger than 35mm, Ironically some of the early 20th century releases shot for the massive screens back then would probably hold up better than latter releases on 35mm(especially cropped).

Probably the biggest advantage you'd see with a 4K screen is actually displaying photography although even at that resolution its still way behind a good 300 dpi print.

I used to buy movies on VHS and had a ton. I replaced a few faves on DVD or BluRay and haven't bought a DVD or BluRay in years now. I don't watch too many movies multiple times anymore and if I do, I find them on cable as I have 4 multi channel premiums with on demand for all of it.

I stopped with dvds. Blurays are too expensive, even used ones. Plus I'm fine with the quality of a DVD, and like you ts, I have hundreds. I don't want to have more than one copy of a movie because of the quality. Doesn't change how good the movie is.

I just upgraded to 4k HDR.... already had the TV. Just finally bought a 4k Player. That movie Dunkirk looks insane. Also planet earth 2. Still need to watch Dark Knight Trilogy and the Departed.

I buy blu-rays during Black Friday or when it's $10 or less. I care about picture quality and sound so that's the main reason I get them. Streaming movie quality isn't as good.

The Departed has a UHD bluray or are you talking about a stream?

That said it won't be as good as Dunkirk or Dark Knight/Dark Knight Rises/Planet Earth 2 in 4k. If I get a 4K Bluray those are the first titles I am getting as well.

What do you mean you upgraded to 4k HDR but had the TV?

Really? I notice it big time. I have a hard time watching non-4k material now. What TV do you have?

How about the cans that spell it blue-ray? ;)

It's not supposed to be 4 times better. It's main advantages are things like wide color gamut(visible spectrum of colors), increase resolution and HDR which is about adding realism to video(combination of peak brightness and black levels).

Not all 4K tvs are equal so it's possible you are comparing your 55 inch 4K curve that isn't calibrated and missing features to a top of the line OLED or LCD that has those features which is pretty significant.

I buy blu rays quite a lot, I don't want to buy 4k dvds just yet, but will maybe do it when I get an xbox one x. I love picture quality though, so I don't regret buying some of the dvds/box sets that I have bought.

Do you have a 4k TV?

i had a dvd collection that i got rid of now. Now i have a few of my favorites on bluray but theres no need for collections now

It depends on your personality. Personally, I'm a collector and enjoy physically owning things. I like having a shelf full of movies and I also like having the best quality possible. I'm perfectly capable of pirating movies but I don't get any satisfaction from it and the quality can vary. Plus, you typically aren't going to get special features.

I've slowed down on my Blu-ray purchases since 4K UHD are out and I focus on those. For movies that I know have pretty much no chance at a 4K release, I'll get the Blu-ray. One important thing about 4K UHD is that we have basically reached max quality. You buy a 4K UHD movie and it's not going to get any better than that. Most movies, old or new are filmed at 2K or 4K. Even if there ends up being a 6K or 8K format one day, they weren't filmed that way so it's pointless. You are essentially getting a master copy/print of the film on disc and we've never had that in history.

Also, I think 4K UHD is going to be the last physical media format. So if care about actually owning things instead of streaming or digital, this is your last chance.

Blu-rays are cheap and 4K UHDs are dropping fast. My advice would be to upgrade from DVD to Blu-ray for the movies you care about but if one of those has a 4K release, get that instead. You don't have to re-get all of your movies but to me, I like watching movies and if I ever think I'm going to want to watch something more than once, I want to physically own it.

Nice... get a One X.
100%. I was thinking about getting a PS4 pro, but there isn't much difference between that and my PS4, other than a 4k player. Will get the Xbox One X for sure this year.
