I had a HUGE DVD library - we're talking 300+ authentic movies and TV series. I know, I know, I could've gone pirate for a fraction of the cost but the collector in me always wants the original! I'm now coming to a point where I'm considering purchasing some of my favorites on Bluray but have come to the crossroad - do I really want to spend thousands of dollars to rebuild but only to have next-gen technology released and have them 'not as good' again?

I'm not much of a tech buff so I have no clue if anything superior to Bluray is going to be released or even when, so if anyone can shed some light on it that would be awesome! I could've googled the answers but I'd rather ask the 'Berry as it never fails.

Do you have a Bluray collection? Is it worth it? Are you scared of the wasted money when/if new technology arrives?

If I'm buying a movie now, I'm going to buy it on bluray. I don't feel the need to covert my entire collection though.

I'm still waiting on full BD releases of the Sopranos, Oz and the Wire but am really tempted to go out and get Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy and the Walking Dead.

I agree.
I have a shit ton of movies
I'm not really worried about rebuying any on BluRay

Eventually they'll come out with exabyte SD cards that you can just slide into your brain. Everything else becomes obsolete then.

I used to buy tons of movies years ago when I had more free time. Now
I just purchase the few that I know I will rewatch on Blu ray. Unless you really really like a certain movie I wouldnt replace your DVD's.

I still buy dvd's depending on how much I think I'll like them or to finish my collection

if I have the first two dark knight movies on DVD (which I do) then I'll buy the third on dvd as well (which I did) I like my collections to be complete if that makes since

I had the first several seasons of dexter on dvd, so each time I buy the new season that comes out I buy it on dvd instead of bluray

I've got over 400 blu rays and they are well worth the money.I don't bother with 3d blu rays though, the only down side is I've bought certain films 3 times over the years, once on VHS,once on DVD,and now on blu.

This.

I don't get the problem. Buy Blurays from now on, keep DVD collection.

frustrating that many titles are yet to get a blueray release

Now I buy everything bluray. I had almost 1000 vhs tapes and refused to accept dvds. Now I have hundreds of dvds. I am a little more grown up, mind you, but I still enjoy my collection. The almost OCD compulsion to replace all my dvds is mostly gone, so now only the movies I think will really shine on bluray.

But do you really think that bluray will enhance anything on say, a movie from the
80s or 90s? The first time a blueray blew me away was saving private ryan, but I would not expect the experience to change much for most movies.

Im kinda in the same boat but usually I only by movies with great graphics that are classics unless its new then its always blu ray

i guess its like HD & SD tv channels, once youve got a taste of the HD everything else inferior

It does in some cases, back to the future, the goonies, the warriors, scarface are all old movies that look brilliant on blu ray, there are some old films that aren't great on blu aswell, like American pie,but the good transfers outweigh the bad.

Abso-fucking-lutely yes. Raw Deal on Blu-ray is something to behold, and fucking Barb Wire looks AMAZING!!!!!

We're talking about an Arnie stinker and Pam Anderson's notorious flop, but on Blu-ray, they're majestic. As soon as I saw a Blu-ray for the first time, I knew my DVDs were going the way of the VHS. It's literally like seeing the movie for the first time for me, especially when you're fortunate enough to get that really top-of-the-line Blu-ray treatment.

I know I sound like an ad, but seriously, if you have even the tiniest bit of respect for movies, Blu-ray is the only way to go. . .until the next thing, of course

QFT.

Thanks for the input, but I would only buy my old favrites on bluray. A stinker is still a stinker, only the flies are more detailed. I did not have my hdmi hooked up correctly on my first few bluray discs. Saving private ryan was the first, and still the most impressive to date. I think having a kid has eriously eaten into my movie time and budget, but I prefer to watch bluray, but dont notice it with older movies, or at least ones that are not visual feasts to begin with. Inception is one of note btw.

Unless I expect a movie to be visually stunning, I still buy the DVD over the Blu Ray as they're usually cheaper.

I recently bought breaking bad seasons 1-4 on blu ray for about 35$ total
