Check out this email I just got from llyod Irvin:

This email will surely be another
controversial topic but here we
go.

I thought that when I got my bjj blue
belt in 30 days that was fast. I don't
have anything on what you're about to
read.

Two weeks before the 2010 BJJ
World Championships I promoted
one of my female named Tracey
Goodell from blue belt to the
rank of purple belt. Some people
said "why would you do that?","Don't
you think it will mess her head up?"
and a bunch of other silly stuff.

Well two weeks later she ended
up winning the her purple belt
division and the purple belt OPEN
division at the World Championships!

Next thing you know people are saying
"I must've been sandbagging her","If
she won her wait and her open she was
a purple belt the whole time " blah blah blah

The fact is that she was a blue belt,
with blue belt skills, making blue belt
mistake and doing what blue belts do.

Then she experienced what I call The
Grappling Phenomenon! If you heard
my audio cd you already know what this
is.

Leading up into the Worlds I used to
personally have these crazy 40-60 minute
straight rolling sessions with her with the
whole purpose of these session to try to
break her! Because if she can roll with a
200+lb black belt that is trying to break her
then there will be no 128lb female that
can.

I've been accused of lots of things but
'sandbagging' has never been one of
them.

On one hand they say I promote to fast,
then I promote to slow, how can I do both?

Well after winning the purple belt Worlds
as a purple belt and only being a purple
belt for a couple of weeks I PROMOTED
HER AGAIN!

And.......

THIS WAS MY FASTEST PROMOTION EVER

Out of the 9 matches that she had she
submitted 8 people and the one she
didn't submit ended the match in a full blown
submission.

So instead of getting more experience as a
purple belt, she has moved onto the rank of
brown belt to battle the Brown Belt Beast.

Knowing what I know, she'll be doing fine
at the brown belt level right away. It's hard
to imagine just a couple of months ago she
was just a blue belt.

Heres the interview: YouTube - Tracey Goodell - Team Lloyd Irvin - Wins Purple Belt Mundials 2010

This dude has never reasonably formatted an e-mail in his life. Everytime I see an e-mail from him, there is a linebreak after every 4 words. Shit is annoying.

Also, belts are cool, I guess. Whatever.

Tracy is a beast. I think she had a match with Hillary at the Abu Dabhi Pro Trials and hillary had a lot to say about her guard, and Tracy was a blue belt then. Before losing to Hillary she tapped out another Brown Belt World Champion in Sophia Amarant.

Tracy definitely deserved the purple a little sooner, but to get it right before the worlds and dominate the way she did is amazing. well deserved quick promotion to brown IMO.

this is my favorite line on this one:

I guess he means when the match was over she had a sub locked in, but it took me a minute to figure that out.

I can see that BJJ evolves into more of the judo way.

A good competitor may be graded very early. I mean if a high level wrestler or judoka with a short period of BJJ training enters a white belt competition I mean wtf?

It should be clear from the get go that if they can hang and roll competitive with people of a higher grade then it is a waste of time and sandbagging if they entered WB comps

Sure they may not have a great number of techniques down but their other grappling experience and in many cases their superior athleticism gets them thru, nobody is pissed that Barnett enters black belt tournies right?

Many young judo guys get their blackbelt as soon as the rules allow them, now if they are strong competitors they have thier game down, but a very specialized game. I have been to classes held by such guys, not that fun. do this and do it alot you know. now we have some older blackbelts, that never really competed much (many of them started as adults) but they have a wast number of techniques down, sure against those young studs they can't really hang but they got the technique down

Good competitor doesn't equal good teacher

Is lloyd a foreigner or just drunk when he types these emails?

Hmmmm..... Pretty damn fast!!! I guess this is the difference between sport BJJ and non sport BJJ. I mean there really isn't a chance she learned all the intricate details of the the techniques that come during being a purple belt, but if she is competing at a brown level then........

He's just a genius marketer. every "mistake" you think you see is purposely placed there and discovered effective through millions of dollars in marketing research of what attracts the eye, gains attention, makes you more likely to open the letter, read what's important, and stay on the page, share the page with others(even just to show them all the "mistakes" and laugh), and lots more.

obviously you're mistaken. she did learn all the intricate details, or she wouldn't be competing like a brown belt.

I guess this warrants the question: what is Lloyd Irvin doing differently? How is he coaching differently? Clearly he has shown results with his students?

Anybody here train under Irvin?

I read that Fowler (and Ryan Hall I guess) drilled for hours, Lloyd set a timer and they jsut took turns doing one technique. remember that those guys trained fulltime early on. training 5+hours a day for most of the week

time spent as structured like that is worth alot

probably boring as hell but effective

The girl hugs with a Gable grip. That's badass.

Sebastian Brosche from my gym actually did the exact same as she at this year's Worlds. Got promoted to purple three weeks before the tournament, took gold in his weight class (medium heavy) and gold in the open weight, submitting all but one opponent. It'll be interesting to see if he gets his brown soon as well.

Well if shes tapping world class brown belts in a big tourney like that, she shouldnt be a blue. Cant argue with results like that.

lol, it just kept feeling like a spam email for one of the nigerian scams or like he was going to help me make my penis grow 3"

I am just blown away.
"BJJ Blue to Brown Belt In 30 Days"

with comp proof!

congrats to her!

My opinion on this is if you get promoted to brown 2 weeks after getting you're purple belt and submitting everyone at the worlds you were sandbagging at either blue or purple pick one.
