Some enemies cannot be parried so dodging will always be your first line of defence. Parrying is also high risk so you might want to practice a bit on an enemy with exaggerated movements, like the big brick trolls. There are two on your way to Father Gascoigne just before the elevator. There's also one outside Cleric Beast.I want to parry more than dodge, but i see your point. If upgrading only takes away hit points, then wtf. I was thinking it would make parrying easier. Also, if there was a gun that parried AND wiped out hit points, then im for that.
You just have to learn proper parry timing, which is generally when an enemy begins its downswing. Not when they raise their weapon but as soon as they begin their forward strike.
