Movies Blade (1998) 25th Anniversary

I think that was very much Wesley Snipes coming through. He had never played a character so subdued so I'm sure he wanted to punch it up some. I do agree that that little fist pump is a bit out of character for the moment. For some reason, him momentarily turning into Nino Brown really works though and I don't know why

It works because it makes sense in that moment. Those two cops have no clue what's going on, but he does, and he's helping/protecting them even if they don't know/understand what's going on, but in the middle of all of this, he has to take bullets from them? That outburst is organic and authentic. It's like Batman's "I'm not wearing hockey pads" line. He's not dancing a jig on his Batmobile like Bruce Willis in The Last Boy Scout. That'd be out of character, it'd ring false.

That moment in the hospital works because it's in character and it makes sense in that context. The moment in the opening doesn't work because it's not in character and it doesn't make sense in that context.

Still have never seen this movie somehow, it always slips past me.

Gotta amend that.

It won't seem as cool now, and not all of the effects hold up, but it's still a damn good time at the movies and better than a good chunk of the superhero movies that have followed in its wake.

I'm kinda surprised no limited cinema release for the anniversary, seems like this movie would do well in modern times. Would be cool to see it for the first time in a theater. Although I guess maybe they don't want to take away from the upcoming remake.

Good point. The thought never would've occurred to me, but if I saw that Blade was playing on the big screen near me, I'd probably go.

There’s also just something about the general aesthetic of the movie that’s very satisfying. It reminds me a lot of T2. It doesn’t feel like it’s as old as it is. An overall timeless yet modern feel to it.

Blade is great fun. Excellent comic book flick....the first Marvel movie that actually kicked ass in the theatre and led the way.
The sequel was also great. Part 3.....very forgettable.

Great track from the 2nd film.

Wesley Snipes really is a decent actor. I guess he’s maybe hard to work with? Idk why he only gets shorty roles now. It can’t be tax evasion since all those motherfuckers in Hollywood cheat on their taxes.

Blade was one of the first comic book movies to come out in the 90’s and it was also rated R.

I thought it’d have a bigger following because everyone I know loves the movie.

The world they created was cool including the villains and Blade meditating. Made the character you can relate to.

Besides the cgi (which isn’t much), the movie still holds up today.

Part 2 is outdated now but I met Del Toro at a local con. One of the friendliest dude I’ve encountered. He signed a poster for me and drew Blade on it. I framed it but haven’t had a chance to hang it in my office. We were talking about dvds and he said if I ever get Blade 2, to send it to his office for a signature. I got the dvd back and he drew the female lead’s dad (the eldest vampire villain) with Michael Bolton hair - it’s in the deleted scenes. I was cracking up. Didn’t know Del Toro had a sense of humor.

There's plenty of stories about him on set for blade 3 and yes apparently he was very difficult to work with by that point.

From what I read, he was method acting. He wouldnt get out of character at all. Thats how serious he took that role. Must of been a gloomy set.

In all fairness, he was still solid in part 3, its everything and almost everyone else that kinda sucked. Also, he apparently had some serious heat and creative differences with the director. That movie was destined for failure.

This used to be one of my absolute favorites. Very few of my VHS tapes spent more time in the VCR than Blade. Snipes kills it, Kristofferson is a better version of Alfred since he actually saddles up and rides, Dorff is an equal parts creepy and cool villain you enjoy watching but still want to see die, and the supporting cast is top-notch all the way down to the smallest character.

Agreed. Excellent structure with the great Kenny Johnson as the confused outsider/audience surrogate and one of the coolest hero intros in film history.

This, though, is my least favorite part of action movies. I hate cheeky BS like this. It takes me out of the moment. I hated this when I was 9 and I still hate it at 34. He hates vampires and he has a job to do that he takes very seriously. This stupid end zone touchdown dance shit doesn't belong.
I agree. The fist bump just never made sense to me other than maybe being a taunt but it was out of place in a movie which seemed like the world building was important.

The other thing that really bothered me was the silver spike design not being actually sharp. They look like … well … you know what they look like.

Doesn't Quinn, when he's about to use the spikes on a captive Blade, joke about him taking his work, "a little too seriously"?
