Social Black Panther (War Room Discussion)

What else would it be? I'm sure it's an alright movie, and being celebrated for that too, but are you saying there isn't this strong "progressive" sentiment being blown up this flick's ass, like it's the first major movie ever with a black lead in it?
Don't know about the movie, but the hype and fanfare surrounding it seems a bit much.

The fact that there's been plenty of black leads in Hollywood for some time now, should probably make you question whether that's actually what's being celebrated.
This movie seems to be a pretty big deal. Why is there a thread on it? What other Marvel movies did the War Room discuss?

I loved this fucking movie as a kid, and no one celebrated it for having a black guy as the lead character...? It was just appreciated, or hated, based on it's individual merit.

"There are worse things out tonight than vampires..."

To be honest I know next to nothing about comic books, but there's an awful lot of stuff being written about this film and there's a lot more to it than just having a black lead. In fact that doesn't seem to be the topic. I've read about it in Scifi channels I subscribe to, and it was all about Afrocentrism and specifically Afrofuturism. Not particularly common in scifi novels, and essentially non-existent in mainstream films.

The thread was made to dump all the inevitable WR style race conversations out of the Mayberry movie thread. I don't know about Marvel movies, but we've had whinging identity politics threads about plenty of films. Last one I remember was the latest ghostbusters, but the Star Wars movies got at least a thread as well.

It does for every Marvel movie though.

There is definitely an added progressive agenda with this one though, that might be hyping it a bit more. It's just kind of funny that it's being hyped as some progressive moment in history, when it's just a silly superhero movie about a guy who dresses up in a cat suit.

Progress!

Some folks are triggered by anything about Black people that isn't negative.

I never really felt that race relations necessarily *improved* under Obama, who was a white-people-pandering centrist, but it definitely feels like they've gotten worse since he left.

But you're proving me right. The fact that this movie is even in the "race conversation" is exactly what I'm talking about. Why is it in the race conversation?

Because it's afrocentric. That's not the same as just having a black lead or black cast though.

Easily the greatest movie of all time...and tremendous progress for civil rights...FINALLY black people are allowed to be in movies...

So what makes that newsworthy in 2018? I mean, if it was 1950 or something, it would be noteworthy. But right now it looks like its being celebrated because black.

Well, I imagine for the fans of the genre having a big mainstream movie release is a big deal. I mean personally I love apocalyptic and dystopian scifi, and I've read and watched everything I can lay my hands on. If there had been no decent budget apocalyptic or dystopian scifi movies made (or even just no Philip K Dick scifi movies), and the first one was being released, I'd think it was a big deal.
As I understand it Afrocentrism has more importance to the identity and politics of many African Americans than just being an aesthetic style or genre of fiction though.

I hope it is good having not seen it either. I’m glad we have decent superheroes. I just hate comics being made sjw. It’s supposed to be an escape.

He’s black so we can be proud
Wtf it isn’t reaL

White people have superman
Superman isn’t white or human.

Most people in the us are white. Movies have to sell to large audiences. Majority audience white meansthe main target demo is white. So you get a lot of white stuff. Lived in japan for three years guess who I saw in the ads and tv mostly?
Comics have been SJW since the early 60's. The mutant hate in the x-men was a stand-in for racism and the civil rights movement.

The Blade and Spawn comparisons crack me up.

Blade was a vampire. He was naturally a monster who had to act against what he naturally was, to be good.

Spawn comes from fucking hell.

Black Panther is an honorable king ruling the most advanced nation on the MCU's earth.

Can you guys figure out why one of those characters would be received or reacted to differently than the other 2?

Sure. That's not what we’re talking about though. We’re talking about the people watching it. Again if it sucked do you think you’d hear about it being bad

Black panther has killed a bunch of people

I hear what you're saying, but it's hard to make that judgement on this movie alone, because Marvel as a whole is pretty much untouchable with critics. Damn near all of them receive overwhelming praise, to the point where you start to think the critical praise might be a little...ahem....manufactured.

Wind makes sailboats move.

OK now you say something that has nothing to do with what I was saying.
What are we showing pride in? It’s fake. It’s less real than wwe. It’s not black or white. It’s fantasy. If anything shouldn’t we be offended at the lack of Latinos given their representation in our total population?
