Hmm, while I understand what you're saying, I think that you're looking at Wakanda through a Western/what makes sense HERE POV. There's 2 things here, 1, Wakanda was shown to be deeply nationalist and traditionalists. And 2, being technologically advanced doesn't take away base human instincts. All good on the long explanation... My eyez have been opened. You're absolutely correct. For me to give even a few moments of thought to what they nominate, is a bit silly given their past.
As I understand it... anything goez... so yes... they are oscar worthy.
Fook Oscar!
I got big broblemz with Black Panther... mainly due to the scene where their leader is decided by combat. FFS they just created this lore where they are the most advanced ancient society but their leader can be taken out if he losez a fight?
Not only should've some meathead gotten control a long time ago & went on a rampage across the world thus exposing their society, but another meathead while thinking they were being sneaky would've made some stupid choices that at least exposed them to the world.
They're not picking the smartest people as leaderz... they're picking fooking Meatheadz who are tough & can win a fight.
We're talking about a society that has been craftily hidden from our view for agez... & you're telling me the fooking leader is decided upon in a fooking fight? That is way to big of a plot hole to even be considered for movie of the year imo.
Imo Avitar is way way better a movie. I seem to be much more of a fan than many vocal blogists... but I don't agree with the thingz I've heard them say. It's such an awesome movie on so many levels.
LOTR 1st movie was imo very valid. Loved that story... & so very well done. I'm with you on your point of view on the other 2... but the first one waz a work of art imo.
Infinity War has issues too... The shield on Wakanda being breached by multiple attacks is completely silly. (Black Panther strikes again.) There are other issues too, but IW waz multiple timez a better movie. I don't care if it requires knowledge of the other movies to get it all... & in fact, I'm not sure it's a requirement to get it all, to realize how much better this movie is. I don't know anyone who doesn't know any background & what their point of view might of been, but I don't think it matterz. Sequelz get nodz too.
None of this matters when considering Oscar nominationz, because they have alternate criteria when making their decisionz... I just thought I'd speak a bit on my personal feelingz about some of the moviez we mentioned.
Rocky was then & still remains an icon of the human resolve & spirit. Very worthy of movie of the year imo... & proven by time.
Why is this "historic"?
per the last paragraph... don't get me wrong... I can look past strange plot points & vibe on the rest of the movie.... I'm just saying that in relation to it being the movie of the year, I'm not down. Even with the fact that the most elite society in the world's leader is decided in mortal Kombat... I still enjoyed the movie.Hmm, while I understand what you're saying, I think that you're looking at Wakanda through a Western/what makes sense HERE POV. There's 2 things here, 1, Wakanda was shown to be deeply nationalist and traditionalists. And 2, being technologically advanced doesn't take away base human instincts.
For a real life example, look at Japan. I heard people talk about the clothes some of the Wakandans wore, and that the spears were some how racist....? Japan is a nation that has modernized, but didn't go full West. People still wear traditional clothing during certain periods of the year/holidays, celebrate outdated holidays and customs that effect everyday way of life (some of those things are a big reason why the birthrate have plummeted). Thailand still has a royal family--in 2019, you can go to prison for saying negative things about the royal family.
And there are plenty of things in the West in government that are outdated.
So for Wakanda, being a king was about being a strong man. The king's duty is to protect his people, and if he can't protect himself, then how he can protect others? Let's also remember the movie, they had the ceremony to challenge the king, but that was the tradition to do it, but nobody actually tried to challenge him.
M'Baku, the guy that did end up challenging him was from the separatist tribe that was unhappy with the status quo.
And then Kilmonger had the right to challenge as well since he had royal blood.
Wakanda is a country that has not been influenced by the outside world, it has developed and maintained it's own culture and rules--why is it weird that they have kept them?
All the technology that we have in the world today hasn't stopped us from dropping bombs, and starving people with sanctions.
With the other movies, I wasn't really trying to attack them. I was just trying to illustrate my point that while you may like some of those movies, there are many others that wouldn't see a substantial difference between a movie like Black Panther and Avatar.
I do think Avatar is a great movie. And I agree on the 1st LOTR movie..but the other 2..? Meh.
I think your criticism of IW and BP are similar...look, I obviously think plot is important, but for the king battle ceremeony and the shield thing in IW to KILL those movies for you, that's crazy, imo..and it's throwing the baby out with the bathwater. There was A LOT more going on in those movies. People seem to keep looking at plot points like that, and not the more deeper things such as Kilmonger's views, the idea of Wakanda, and the idea of what makes a good leader/king---THAT was what the movie was about.
I get the importance to recognize a cast of all black actors but the movie was average.

And yet you ignored the plot of the movie. You explained the settings, but not the conflicts within the characters (the driving point of the movie).
An outsider threatens a strong, closed off society by entering, forcing its need to be saved.
The only difference is the antagonist is the outsider in Black Panther whereas the protagonist was the outsider in Aquaman. The easiest way to write something "original"? Write the polar fucking opposite of something that already has been done. Its lazy writing to copy Black Panther like that.
I've seen both of those movies. AND I love them both.
Out of all the comic book adaption movies out there, you bring up Blade 2
