People think whatever they started out with is traditional. If a guy started at a school with a lot of black gis, he'd probably still balk at a red or yellow one.
Rickson only allows white gis, FTR.
I have one white, one black and one blue. Someday I will switch to only white - and here's why.
(the following information comes from Mark Law's book The Pyjama Game, I have not independently verified it.)
My understanding is that the reason white was adopted for JJJ was that the samurai traditionally wore white clothes under their armour. White is a funerary colour in Japan - it is the colour of death. They wore these clothes so that if they were killed in battle, they were prepared for their own funeral.
So, symbolically each time you put on a white gi you are preparing to die.
That's way more badass than wearing a black gi because you think it makes you look like Sho Kosugi.
Exactly man! The samurai were all about being clean and pure before death thats what i meant by out of repect , I dont care what color gi people wear , the only kinda gi i dispise is the camo gi's for just pure cheeziness .
but really once your on the mat its all about skill and training who cares let the person be the most comfortable he can be right ?
I have 2 white (atama and fuji) , black (fuji) and my blue shoyoroll .
