Black Gi - Acceptable for White belt?

People think whatever they started out with is traditional. If a guy started at a school with a lot of black gis, he'd probably still balk at a red or yellow one.

Rickson only allows white gis, FTR.

I have one white, one black and one blue. Someday I will switch to only white - and here's why.

(the following information comes from Mark Law's book The Pyjama Game, I have not independently verified it.)

My understanding is that the reason white was adopted for JJJ was that the samurai traditionally wore white clothes under their armour. White is a funerary colour in Japan - it is the colour of death. They wore these clothes so that if they were killed in battle, they were prepared for their own funeral.

So, symbolically each time you put on a white gi you are preparing to die.

That's way more badass than wearing a black gi because you think it makes you look like Sho Kosugi.

Exactly man! The samurai were all about being clean and pure before death thats what i meant by out of repect , I dont care what color gi people wear , the only kinda gi i dispise is the camo gi's for just pure cheeziness .

but really once your on the mat its all about skill and training who cares let the person be the most comfortable he can be right ?

I have 2 white (atama and fuji) , black (fuji) and my blue shoyoroll .

@heavygrappler

lol but Yellow and red are colours that have come around recently in the last few years through the expansion of the kimonos market.

imo -i am ok with white, black, blue and red in competitions. anything else it's a fashion show.

also I hate those kimonos with different colour pants to the top!! lol

So.... what exactly is the point of honoring the JAPANESE samurai tradition when training in BRAZILIAN jiu jitsu?

I've used a black gi for training since I started. I don't like wearing a white gi because of scuffs and stains. I wear white in competition only.

For training, I'm using what will keep it's condition better.. which is black.

I think the point is acknowledging we do a 'martial' art

I have white blue and black...bought a black one when i got my brown belt..but really didnt wear it a lot till i got my black belt

brown and black clash ; )

I don't think it will be a problem, but with my experience some clubs only allow white and blue, cuz that's all they allow in competitions.

Talk to your instructor, I'm sure they won't have a problem with it.

i've seen a couple white belts at my school with black gis. nobody really cares. it's not for me, and i'll probably never own a black gi, but if that floats your boat, run with it.

I don't think anyone would say something to you unless they were a little on the insecure side.

For me though, I'm sticking with the gi that I have a Blue Koral and getting a White Fuji as a back up so I don't do laundry everyday. I just don't like to be the guy who obviously dumped copious amounts of cash when I'm showing up for the first day of BJJ training or really any other type of competitive activity.

I'lll probably get a black gi when I get my purple belt. I kind of like the idea of buying myself a new gi for each promotion

check with your instructor 1st...
If your instructor has any sort of rules in place...FOLLOW THEM!!!

Otherwise, i say where whatever colour of gi you want!

Definitely!! I know my friend's academy they have some strict rules thre. White belts have to wear only white Gi that are the "academy" Gi. Blue is allowed to wear Black as well as the white, then Purple and above can wear Blue,Black, and/or White as long as they are the "academy" Gi.

~~My school is super relaxed. The instructor says he wants us to come to train and express ourselves....I was rocking the Ninja Turtle Green Tatami Gi while a classmate was weaing the Orange Dragonball Z by Modern Flow. We were heckled, but it sure is fun.

You could also stalk the gym's facebook page to see what colour gi the white belts are wearing. That's what I do before I join a new gym hahaha

Check with your gym but you shouldn't have a problem. One of my first gis were black and I never got called out for it.

If I ran a school and somebody showed up in a dbz gi, they wouldn't be a member any longer.
