Hey everyone!

I have been training NoGi BJJ but never got into Gi. Now, I plan to start going the Gi class but I am a whitebelt and the Gi is black. From what I understand this is a shady area...

I guess it depends on the professor/gym. I tried searching, but did not come to any real conclusion. Seems like Black should be ok, but has anyone had a problem with this?

Thanks for the responses in advance!

Cheers!

atama munidal 9 is a very nice kimono

I doubt they will mind you wearing it

A few white belts have black gis where I train, no one seems to care really.

Don't worry, it shouldn't matter (I had a black gi when I was a white belt).

most people who have been doing it awhile, or who are good at jiujitsu find it presumptuous

I'm a white belt and have 2 Blue Gi's and 1 Black Gi. No one has ever said anything about it. Other white belts at my gym have black Gi's too.

I've found that everyone is pretty damn cool and we are all their the train BJJ. If someone has a problem with the color of your Gi then they obviously aren't concentrating on BJJ.

Wear it proud. Plus, it'll turn gray pretty soon after many washes :D

no they don't. only if you act like a poseur then people will have a problem

that said I waited till I was a blue belt when i bought my first black kimono.

Black kimonos look great imo and are accepted now in the major tournaments

I'd find it presumtuous if you were wear stupid colours like a yellow or a camo kimono - or one of those stupid kimonos I have seen that are all the colors of the rainbow.

Just ask yourself three questions:

1. Does pain exist in your dojo?
2. Does fear exist in your dojo?
3. Does defeat exist in your dojo?

If the answer to all of these questions is 'No sensei!' then knock yourself out! :D

On a serious note, if anyone cares about the colour of your gi they are likely to have a chip on their shoulder, I agree with JDS Cigano, how you behave is the issue, not the colour of your gi.

Nah dude, you're all set. You can wear a pink gi as long as your belt is indicative of your rank.

You can't go wrong with white, blue or black.

I have no problem with red but it's not my style.

I got my black a few weeks after I started.. No problems so far but no EGO here either...

Had 1 black Gi, wore it for months. No one complained. Funny note, I heard saulo is against black gis from my instructor. When I heard that, I was like "didn't he wear a black gi in his instructional?" Lol

Poseur, hahaha.

Nah, there will be no problem. Unless of course, you are not allowed to wear black gi's in your dojo. I've felt the same way before, wearing a black gi at a low rank, or a gi with lots of patches. They just seem flashy and it seems you have to back it up with your skills. I don't think it should matter though. Might seem a little weird being the only one in a black gi.

At my school, our instructor said he would only promote people wearing White or Blue Gis. Don't know if that's uncommon or not, but you may want to ask your instructor what his thoughts are.

Hey everyone!

I have been training NoGi BJJ but never got into Gi. Recently, I was given a Gi as a Gift which is an Atama #9. Fits perfect, feels nice. Now, I plan to start going the Gi class but I am a whitebelt and the Gi is black. From what I understand this is a shady area...

I checked out the Gi class yesterday, and most were wearing White/Blue Gi's and there was one Brown Gi (but the guy was a blue belt).

Anyway, I guess it depends on the professor/gym. I tried searching, but did not come to any real conclusion. Seems like Black should be ok, but has anyone had a problem with this?

Thanks for the responses in advance!

I'd ask the instructor.

@CodyD agreed dude! I wore white/blue kimono until I reached blue then I bought kimonos with patches and fancy stuff. purple belt i got a black one

i think they look great if you're a higher belt.

Ask the instructor. Most of the students will take their cues from him. If he has no problem, neither will they.

Just be aware some schools do not allow it. If you ever want to travel and train it is a good idea to pick up a white gi.

Our gym sells black gis so, I guess they can't have an issue with it. :)

I wouldn't say it bothered me, but it definitely caught my attention when a guy showed up one day with a black gi, and I chuckled at it. And his gi also had a giant UFC patch. I guess he trained a while at a UFC gym. I doubt it's big enough of an issue for anyone to say anything about it, but it may be looked down upon.
